Buyer Beware!

I'm surprised with all of these 5 star reviews that there isn't one negative review. While this book is great at showing off lighting techniques (And why I gave it 2 instead of 1 star)... This book is also a giant ad for Kubota actions. Buying Kevin Kubota's dashboard, lightroom presets, and photoshop actions (also available at his website) end up costing you hundreds of additional hours to achieve the look of the images in this book.

So, if you already are waist deep in Kubota's tools, fantastic, buy this book. You'll soar.

If you are new to photography, or just looking for an affordable path to make your photos better, I'd avoid this.. As, you are being led down a very expensive path from the author.

A decent book with some interesting ideas

I bought this book twice - first time as a gift for a friend of mine who helped me with photography when I was starting and recently again to show some of my colleagues from photo business how to make a decent studio setups with little effort.

I like this book as it is very descriptive and has a lot of info about used equipment for specific shoots. I'm however a bit confused about its particular targeted crowd - new photogs will probably have problems finding exactly same equipment to use (SB-800 anyone?) and older, more experience photogs will already have their own stuff, probably of different brand and/or type and they generally know most of these setups. I took one star for that one - I know it is an older edition, but still.

Still, there are some really cool samples and ideas within this book so I guess $20 isn't much for it, especially since a decent lens is most likely 100x more expensive anyway...

I removed a second star due to annoying and really cheap way that Mr. Kubota promotes his product throughout the whole book. Pretty much ANY photo he took he sent through Photoshop and used some of his filters (which he, of course, would be more than happy to sell to you), pretty much telling you how you can get a good result without software. Boulderdash.

This shameless self-promotion is pitiful and totally misleading. While I think that Mr. Kubota has some really cool photos in his portfolio and is certainly a man with good ideas, this books tarnishes that reputation somewhat.

After all is said and done, my recommendation is that you look for a different book with similar material. This one is somewhat old and although it has some decent setups and ideas you can find similar material presented elsewhere and with less shameless self-promotion.

Disappointing

I was very disappointed with this book. Kubotas first item in this "lighting notebook" is a backlit pair of girls. How are they lit? With flashes? With reflectors? Nope... sunlight through a window. Thank you for this extremely obvious and useless example. People buying lighting books are generally more advanced shooters. This example was and is completely unnecessary.

Which ended up being the tone of this book. It ramps up quickly into extremely expensive lighting examples. There are very few examples for the mid-level photographer. Kubotas uses a price indicator and when half of his examples run over $1000, it's pretty obvious that the book is worthless for anyone who owns that much lighting gear.

While a few of the examples are useful, more than half are not. You're better off searching youtube and collecting videos from a variety of sources. Two stars at most.

Very Helpful

The GIS Tutorial Workbook for Arcview 9 is very helpful. You can learn at your own pace, granted it does take a while to learn (a few hours per section - including the exercises). Everything is layed out including side notes. I like how it says what to correct or how you can change back to the original settings, which makes this workbook a good future reference as well. The pages are not overcrowded, so you don't feel overwhelmed with information overload in one page. The material is spread out nicely and not too wordy. Compared to the online ERSI tutorials/modules, this book is really user-friendly, because the online ERSI tutorials/modules are very wordy and they give a lot of sale pitch language that I could do without. (It already takes a good deal of time to do the online tutorials; I don't need to be bogged down with rubbish introductions.) However, the GIS Tutorial Workbook gets right to the point, which I like. Thank you for such a comprehensive workbook! Yay!

Be careful buying this used, or even in a bookstore!

Be careful buying this used, or even in a bookstore! At my university bookstore this title is unwrapped and you can open the back cover and see the registration code that cannot be used twice, the code could easily be stolen by another student.

Buy it at Amazon(new only, not from 'other sellers') or directly from ESRI(as my Geography professor always recommends due to hearing stories about students not being able to use the software after someone stole the code). Best price at Amazon though. This title takes longer to get than many Amazon titles, so plan ahead by about a week and a half at least.

Book arrived promptly and in mint condition. The description of the book could have been more detailed as other versions were also offered and it was difficult to tell whether I had the right version...but I did and the disks were all included as promised!

Get Ready To Toe The Line...

If you do a quick google search of Grete Waitz you will find a ton of information on such an accomplished runner. For this alone her book is worth considering. Her wealth of knowledge is put to good use as she walks the runner through the experience from the ground up, moving from beginning training to after finishing, giving anecdotes and examples along the way.

I've ran in 6 marathon or longer races thus far and am still learning some of what she writes in this book. Reader beware, though, this book is for exactly what the title states, for runners looking to run their first marathon. A lot of the information given is very basic to runners who have ran this distance already, but to someone who never has ran 26.2 she touches on every aspect and allows the runner to become well informed in what they are getting into.

She briefly touches on two training schedules within the book. The first is for those readers who have ran very little at all. It sets them up and begins conditioning them to running, which in turn prepares them for the actual marathon training. So if you do run some then the training schedule number two is where you would begin. But it is very basic, kind of a run these miles on these days on this week. And she makes it clear that this book is not meant as a day by day guide to your training.

Instead she focuses on the stuff that is overlooked when researching and preparing for a marathon. She goes over running basics, such as form and speed and so on, as well as signs to prevent injury, motivation, and running gear among other information. But the most important chapter is Chapter 12: Marathon Nutrition and Hydration. Even if you have ran a marathon before this is a good chapter to read and refresh and/or educate yourself again. There is a good amount of base information that will probably go the farthest for any marathon hopeful in aiding them to the finish line. Additionally, the final chapter, The Race, is also very useful for the beginning runner because it goes over some of what you will feel, see and expect when you toe the line.

I wish I would have found Mrs. Waitz's book before I ran my fateful, yet ill prepared first marathon at San Francisco.

If you are a first time marathoner I would give this book a good read and set your goals on that marathon.

You can do better.

By hearing the credentials of Grete Waitz, I was expectant to learn much from this book about my first marathon training. What I got however, was the desire to break out a red pen and an overwhelming need to get a better book. The entire work is filled with obvious grammatical errors (even on the back cover, "udated" rather than "updated" is featured in bright yellow lettering. If only I had paid attention to that!) English errors aside, this isn't a very helpful book as a guide. Most of the information in it is little more than common sense, and if it isn't, could have easily been gleaned from the internet. Grete has but one 16 week training program, and a bonus one previous to that to make sure you are fit to run. The descriptions of the programs are lacking at best, and offer scant insight on the timing of strength training or stretching. For a better knowledge base and a book you'll go back to when you have questions, try The Marathon Method: The 16-Week Training Program that Prepares You to Finish a Full or Half Marathon in Your Best Time By Tim Holland- it features far more detailed and varied training plans, so you'll be more likely to find one that suits you. With all respect to Waitz and her amazing accomplishments, her book fell far short of the training bible she claims it to be.

Good read

Interesting, well-written and informative book. It is truly a book for first-timers, however, and most of the information -although relevant to running- is general, for the large public. She does cover most if not all topics that you might want to read about. It is a good inspiration especially if you doubt you can run a marathon.

Notable mainly for its clear and thorough exploration of the Object Modeling Technique (OMT)--a generic way of representing objects and their relationships--this book is good as a primer and great as a knowledge booster for those already familiar with object-oriented concepts. Object-Oriented Modeling and Design teaches you how to approach problems by breaking them down into interrelated pieces, then implementing the pieces. In addition to its documentation of the Object Modeling Technique (OMT), a graphical notation for depicting object-oriented systems, Object-Oriented Modeling and Design does a first-rate job of explaining basic and advanced object-orientation concepts. The book then moves on to explain the authors' techniques for breaking down problems into components and figuring out systems of interrelated objects that can be used as designs for programs. Interestingly, the authors devote part of their book to implementing object-oriented solutions in non-object-oriented languages--mainly C, Ada, and Fortran. There's also a great discussion of implementing object-oriented designs in relational database environments. The authors conclude their book with a sort of recipe section, detailing architectures for various types of programs in OMT.

One of the OO bibles

A landmark in OO literature: always was and always will be. Taking things from step zero to discussing very advanced issues. The notation used is the one where UML has borrowed most of its elements (especially the class diagrams). The process it describes has become the typical process for OO development (especially 2nd generation OMT as described through a series of articles in JOOP by Rumbaugh). In all, a book that leaves nothing uncovered from notation to process and more importantly in depth discussions on OO concepts and techniques that will always be true. Finally, this is one of the few books that discuss how to implement an OO design into a non-OO language such as C, Pascal, Fortran etc. END

Lots of fluff, very little content

This book gives what seems like a reasonably good description of each of the three OMT models: object, functional and dynamic. Unfortunately, when attempting to use the ideas presented, one becomes immediately aware that no explanation of how to use all three models together is given.
Looking at the examples, one finds that the examples in each model's section are totally unrelated to the examples in the other two model's sections. Essentially, the authors have fabricated example systems for each section that are easy to describe using that particular model, but have failed to show the other two models for those systems. This book would have been far better if the same set of examples were carried through the three types of models, showing how they interrelate.
The primary problem with the book, however, seems to be that it's about OMT. OMT has many serious flaws. OMT's object model notation is reasonable. The functional model notation is satisfactory. The dynamic model is incomplete. And the three models are not related to eachother in any clear way by this book. Without fixing the flaws inherent in OMT, any book on OMT is going to be mostly useless.

This book is an excellent book for beginners as well as advanced guys in the charismatic field of OMT and OOAD. The book gives an excellent description of Object Modelling, Functional modelling and Dynamic modelling. The examples are good and understandable but they can be simplified. Over all an interesting and good book.

Kaysen's tell-all memoir received an immense amount of media attention and critical praise. The book became a best seller and has recently been made into a movie. In 1967, after taking 50 aspirins to abort the parts of her that she didn't like, the author for the first time visited a psychiatrist, who immediately called a taxi and hospitalized her. The money that her parents had intended to spend on her college education instead went into paying for a two-year stay at McClean Hospital. Poets Sylvia Plath and Robert Lowell, singers James, Kate, and Livingston Taylor, as well as Ray Charles are among the hospital's renowned clientele or, as they call themselves, "graduates." Kaysen offers good insights on the connections among poetry, music, and madness as well as a vivid account of institution life. She is at her best when gossiping, describing her surroundings, and offering one-liners on her stay at McClean. Unfortunately, her reading is flat and ultimately difficult to listen to. I just finished reading this book. I started reading it before I went to sleep and could not put it down! I stayed up all night long and into the dawn just to keep reading!!! This book is so beautifully written. At times it is casually poetic. It is an account of one 18 year old young womyn's memoirs of her two year stay in a mental hospital in 1967. The author, Susanna Kaysen, offers the reader rich, vivid characters and surroundings laced with humor. Not even once did I find this book sad. I found it funny more often than not, and insightful, pithy and so, so very true! I have spent the evening talking about it with family and friends, begging them to give it a read. Now I'm begging YOU! YOU SIMPLY MUST READ THIS ELOQUENT, FUNNY, CHARMING, WISE BOOK! The insights that are in here are worth hours of pondering. I love the relationships between the young womyn in the ward. She depicts them so well I can see them clearly still in my mind's eye, sitting on yellow vinyl chairs, folding paper flowers ~ Lisa cutting to the heart of any going's on with her twisted humorous, yet uncanny, straight-to-the-heart-of-the-matter insights. This book shows you both the dark and light side of living in a mental institution... and all the questions about culture and existence in between.

Loved this book and can't wait to start reading it again! Even more intriguing than the film... and much more insightful.

Enjoy...

The book is written as an easy and followable dialect. It is important to remember that this is essentially a personal account by the author and not intended to be a full out fictional tale. Several people I loaned the book to couldn't seem to grasp the angle for which the narrator was coming from. I had seen the movie, however many many moons ago, but the story seemed to remind me of many parts of the film. I would say this is a compliment on the movie for sticking to the script of the book. The book itself isn't very long, so it is definitely a fast read.

A little jumbled

I was super excited to read this book because of its high critical acclaim but as it turns out its not written very well. The first 2/3rds of the book could be combined into one chapter and there is a lot of over lap, repeated information and run on sentences. The meat and potatoes starts 2/3rds of the way into the book with the chapter called "Borderline Personality Disorder." Finally the writer makes a point but then looses the audience by admitted shes an elitist who doesn't really care for going to college, learning new things or even taking self inventory for the reason why she tired to commit suicide. Rather she just laughs off the whole idea as something any young adult would do and then spends her time complaining about being admitted to the hospital. She has some great criticisms about hospitals but then looses the reader when she makes it all about herself and why she's better than any treatment or the need for any help. Not sure why this book is so popular but the movie was great. Sadly the movie is NOTHING like the book in every way.
