Concerned Parent

Book should be entitled "Dare to Hit Your Child with Whatever is Handy". Dobsen extolls virtues of his wife snapping their not yet two-year-old with a switch across the shins, can you imagine? He also attests that he received great benefit, as a child, by being spontaneously walloped by his mom's girdle, complete with buckles and straps.
The fact is, that spontaneous anger from a parent can be beneficial to a child, in seeing that his actions may set off undesired reactions. Yet, spontaneous violence sends an absolutely wrong message of physical superiority making "right" in a confrontational situation.
My children turned out quite well, I think with equal parts luck, love, and parental boundries. I didn't get anything from this book (I read it years ago) that I utilized in child-rearing, except a dedication to never hit my children.

Worst possible book for adult survivors of childhood abuse

"Dare to Discipline" by Dr. James Dobson is a dangerous book that can lead to child abuse. If you are an adult person who had abusive parents, and you are trying to break the cycle of abuse, DO NOT READ THIS BOOK.

The concepts in "Dare to Disciple" about overcoming a child's will and Dobson's ongoing pushing of the "need" for correction can come off, to an abuse survivor, as justification for physical abuse of a child. This is a terrible tragedy, as proper discipline and guidance are essential for a child, but a safe pattern for that is not found in "Dare to Discipline."

Any person who grew up physically, emotionally, or abused in any other way needs to AVOID Dr. Dobson's concepts, especially "Dare to Discipline."

In order for adult abuse survivors to be good parents, they need to deal with the faulty "discipline" and abusive patterns that were beaten into them. That will be greatly hindered if abuse survivors read books by Dr. James Dobson.

First adult abuse survivors need to relearn proper childhood and to heal from the abuse. An excellent book for that is, "Adult Children of Abusive Parents: A Healing Program for Those Who Have Been Physically, Sexually, or Emotionally Abused" by Steven Farmer.

Christianity offers healing and hope for people, but for those who survived abusive parents (especially those who did the abuse form a religious motive) must avoid Dr. James Dobson's concepts. A good resource for that is "The Subtle Power of Spiritual Abuse" by David Johnson and Jeff VanVonderen.

I am not meaning to put down Dr. James Dobson, but his work is truly dangerous for adult survivors of childhood abuse.

Need an excuse to batter your child??

If you're looking for an excuse to abuse your child, this book is for you. If you are the victim of a monstrous parent like Dobson, this book will give you nightmares. He even describes, in detail, various physical abuse. Incredible that his books sell.

Learn Eruption Step-By-Step At A Playable Speed for Intermediate Skill Level & Up

I just got this book and the break-down of "Eruption" by itself is worth the price of admission. The book comes with a code where you can go online and download the accompanying audio files. The songs are broken up into 4 or 5 pieces on the audio files to aid with learning particular sections. The pieces are played at both normal speed and at 1/2 to1/4 speed so that an intermediate can keep up. These transcriptions are the real deal and even "Eruption" is manageable at the slow-demo speed for most intermediate players. The only downside to this product is that whole songs with backing tracks are not offered like with other Hal Leonard PLay-Along series publications like Van Halen 1978-1984: Guitar Play-Along Volume 50 (Hal Leonard Guitar Play-Along) I originally subtracted 1 star for not have the full length backing tracks, but decided not to as the author of this product probably had no control over this aspect.

You may wish to invest in a piece of music tempo software so that you can gradually increase the rpms of the tracks. I use Song Surgeon 4 (just google it) and I love it. There are also some cheaper alternatives that aren't quite as snazzy like Amazing Slowdowner.

Great but with one flaw...

The tabs and tracks are EXTREMELY well put together. So why only 4 stars? Because they didn't include these tracks on a CD that came with the book, which should have been done for this price. I had to download the tracks and then make my own CD, which was a pain in the a$$.

A good guide to learn the licks of the master Ed. Notes on each song give you the inside scoop on how to attack that section. It also includes the links to download both Full Band demos and slow demos to help you nail the tough stuff. Overall, a great guide to get you started on nailing Edward's music.

Love this book!

I have all of Marilynn Ham's piano books and love them all. This book contains great hymns of the faith, like "To God Be the Glory", "All That Thrills My Soul", My Faith Has Found a Resting Place", "Be Thou My Vision", a medley of "Trust and Obey", "'Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus", and several others. They are all well written and not too difficult even though it is labeled advanced. I have small hands and appreciate not only the musicality of these arrangements, but also that she doesn't have page after page of arpeggios and octaves. ("No One Ever Cared for Me Like Jesus", however, is a difficult one, in my opinion). Believe me, you will love her books if you haven't tried them before.

Good book for fans of Marilynn Ham

I am a church musician with a degree in music and I own approx. 200 books of sacred solo piano arrangements including 14 by Marilynn Ham. While skill level can be a bit subjective, I feel this book is properly labeled. The arrangements in this book are typical of other Marilynn Ham arrangements published by Lillenas in terms of style, level of difficulty, and length. There are one or two pieces that might be categorized as intermediate but all the rest are advanced and will require some practice. Unlike some of her other Lillenas books, there are only two medleys in this collection. The arrangements are:
Be Thou My Vision, (E-flat), 6 pages;
All That Thrills My Soul, (A-flat), 5 pages;
Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee, (G, B-flat), 5 pages;
As the Deer, (E, C), 6 pages;
My Faith Has Found A Resting Place, (G, B-flat), 6 pages
It Is Finished with Because He Lives, (c minor, C, F), 7 pages
Trusting Jesus Medley (Trust and Obey with `Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus), (F, D-flat, D), 5 pages
No One Ever Cared for Me like Jesus (C, D-flat), 6 pages
To God Be the Glory, (A-flat, D-flat), 5 pages
Battle Hymn of the Republic, (C, A, B-flat), 5 pages.
While this isn't one of my top favorite Marilynn Ham books, it was nice to have solo piano arrangements of songs you don't often see published such as All That Thrills My Soul and No One Care for Me like Jesus. Those two and As a Deer are the standouts of this collection. Although it is the simplest in level difficulty, My Faith Has Found a Resting Place is also an effective arrangement. The biggest disappointment of this collection is It Is Finished with Because He Lives. Just the chorus of Because He Lives is included and doesn't feel like it was integrated well into the arrangement. If you are new to Marilynn Ham, this may not be the place to start but fans will definitely want this book.

Dissapointing

I had big plans for this book. It was labeled 'advanced', but really isn't. The arrangements are fitting for an intermidiate pianist who wants to work on something a bit more challenging. They are a wierd length --- too long for an offeratory, but to short for a special. They avaerage 4-5 pages long each. Nice variety of songs, though. Some are old hymns, and then they have newer titles. There is a medley of 'It is Finished' and 'Because He Lives', and I was very exited about it. But, it is really boring -- sounds like backround music. It could've been so much more powerful (it could've been longer too, you're just getting into it when it ends. Sounds rushed.) The 'Trusting Jesus Medley' could've been very beautiful, but it is too easy.
The good thing about this book, as the other reviewer stated, is that there are no impossible arpeggios. All the arpeggios in these arrangements are fitting and doable. They never sound out of place. These are definately not the piano solos I had wanted, but I will try to use some of them.
