Outstanding Book!

Mr. O'Donnelll has succeeded in writing a very practical, effective, and efficient book on how to get lean and fit (and stay that way for the rest of your life) with very practical, effective, and efficient strategies and routines based on sound principles and concepts.

His rationale and methodology epitomize the true-to-life maxims of "knowledge is power" and "less is more." So, if you're a person with a busy lifestyle but one who is truly motivated and committed to making a long term change for the better, this book is for you. The "system" delineated within its pages is genuinely "real life" simple and practical. It's one that you can stick with for the long run.

Now, I could summarize the book and highlight all the key points but, out of respect for Mr O'Donnell, I'm not going to do that so as not to steal his thunder.

Lest you think I'm a friend of Mr O"Donnelll and full of hyperbole, I'm not on both counts. I don't know the man or arbitrarily praise something when it's not warranted. I'm just the kind of guy who likes to give credit when it's genuinely due. Anyway, I assure you that purchasing this book will be a worthwhile investment if you follow his plan and at $2.99, it's more than a bargain.

The one and only criticism I had of this book was with its lack of descriptive instructional photos within for the exercises espoused. However, I rescinded this thought when I discovered the appendix section provides a direct link to his website that has videos and other resources which clearly describe and demonstrate the exercises he advocates in his book.

Bottom line, the man and his methods make a whole lot of good sense. As a result, this book is definitely one of the best, most practical guides I've come across in this genre. Oh, this is coming from someone who has his Bachelor's degree in Kinesiology and is already in good condition but remains the perpetual student constantly checking out what others have to offer in order to continuously learn and refine.

Mike clearly shares his knowledge with the layperson in mind, real people, real results, real simple. Anyone can incorporate this way of life & realize you don't have to workout all day long to balance out your life with fitness, & a little spiritual fitness, to boot. I love his simple lifestyle, as, for me, this carries into all areas of life, keep it simple, keep it enjoyable, fast, intense, done...what more could you want. Try it you will like it.

Mr. O'Donnell is a genuine fitness trainer who struggles with finding the answer to the question of "How is it we get fit?" those who muster up the courage to go to the gym and slog through the grinding routine of exercise machines, weights in every form, and diets that are complicated, even daunting in their requirements usually end up disappointed and after considerable work find themselves right back where they started.
Mr. O'Donnell encourages simple body weight exercises , done with intensity over 15 minutes. He encourages the reader to play, walk, move, transforming exercise into something that is a simple activity of your every day life.

the book is a good read, and I think if you take his ideas to heart you might actually wake up one day being the fit person you have wanted to be. No magic pill. No quick solution. Just some consistent work and common sense.

Eindar had once been ruled by a royal house of humans, but that era ended when the last human king—Lorant the Third—took a vampire wife and died, leaving the kingdom in her care. Queen Isix abdicated in favor of her son Adraxus, and the sons of his line had occupied the throne of the Shadow Palace ever since.
By custom, the vampire kings choose human consorts to rule by their side. A king chose his consort for any number of reasons, but rarely was love involved. Or so it was until the last consort of King Idrax died, leaving behind a most unusual bequest. Lady Judita’s final gift to the kingdom and the king she’d loved was a complete surprise, and it changed …everything.

Bride of the Midnight King is a novella (30K), the first in a series of stories inspired by the classic fairy tales retold by the Brothers Grimm in which “Cinderella” takes place in a world where vampires and humans coexist.

Inventive, unusual take on the Cinderella story

I'll admit that I'm generally not a huge reader of vampire tales, but the cover and blurb drew me in, and I realized this wasn't your standard vamp story at all. In this fantasy world, vampires and humans coexist, although it's clear the vampires are the "betters" in this society. The vampire king always takes a human wife, however, because it's difficult to procreate otherwise.

Yala is a human girl, slaving in her stepmother's gaming house and dreaming of how she might make her escape from her days of drudgery. When the vampire king's late wife leaves behind a letter stating her dying wish that her husband choose his next wife from the attendees at a great ball, Yala might finally have a chance to find someone who truly loves her.

As with most fairytale retellings, it's all in how it's done, and Kat Parrish creates a lush a fully realized world that has vampires and humans living together, and sometimes even falling in love. While this story is complete in itself, it also leaves matters open for more stories about King Idrix and Yala, something I'm very much looking forward to!

A fun read!

I haven't read anything by this author before, but I was drawn in by the cover and the blurb. Then I couldn't stop reading- this is one of those books I had a hard time putting down. The heroine Yala is more sensible and clever than the typical YA protagonists. Her sense of humor made her very easy to root for. I loved the romantic tension between Yala and the king. The side characters, particularly the king's father and his cousin, were very enjoyable. I have a weakness for fractured fairy tales- this take on Cinderella was fresh and absorbing. The "vampireness" wasn't emphasized as much as the two-natured characteristics of the society- more like a fantasy than a paranormal romance. Anyway, this book is going into my "re-read" many times pile until the next one comes out!

I did not enjoy this story, I didn't even finish it. For me that is very unusual. This is essentially a vampire Cinderella tale with a few minor twists and differences. I had to stop at 71% not only because it's redundant, but also because the author is too wordy.....sometimes I felt there was more to the chapter, just for the sake of elongating the story. I didn't like it, but I'm sure there are plenty who will, it's free so......if you think you're even a little interested what have you got to lose.

Dan Abnett (born 12 October 1965) is a British comic book writer and novelist. He has been a frequent collaborator with fellow writer Andy Lanning, and is known for his work on books for both Marvel Comics, and their UK imprint, Marvel UK, since the 1990s, and also 2000 AD. His Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40,000 novels and graphic novels for Games Workshop's Black Library now run to several dozen titles and have sold over 1,150,000 copies as of May 2008. Great Comic Book Fun & Action!

Just finished listening to "The Avengers - Everybody Wants To Rule The World" released by Graphic Audio.
Based on the original prose novel by Dan Abnett, "Everybody Wants To Rule The World," follows Captain American, Iron Man, the Black Widow, Hawkeye, Thor, and Bruce Banner as they each are investigating separate threats to the safety and security of the world and each team member becomes increasing uneasy about the sudden increase in criminal organizations like Hydra and AIM, and super villains The High Evolutionary and Ultron wanting to take over the world - is it mere coincidence, or is there an unexpected puppet-master behind the scenes with their own reason for wanting Humanity to be crushed and ruled over?
Great Comic Book Action and Fun!
Highly Recommended!

An enjoyable stand alone adventure (but way overpriced)

I have listened to a couple of the Marvel prose novels that were adapted by GraphicAudio. I highly recommend them as they are excellent full cast audio productions. Those were based on specific Marvel events (like Civil War), but this one didn’t appear to come from any specific comic storyline. I own this on audio, but decided to try reading it first.

The story throws the reader right into the action. Some “bad guys” walk into an officer building to collect a special order they’ve made – and kill everyone in the conference room. The leader is none other than Baron Strucker and Cap is hot on his trail. The book then jumps to Tony Stark trying to avert a global catastrophe when Ultron rises again. The book skips among each of the Avengers dealing with separate “Alpha level” events. Global communications are down, so they can’t communicate with each other. But why are all the supervillains suddenly determined to rule the world right now?!

The first half of the book is fairly chaotic and the action is nearly non-stop at break neck speed. The POV changes every chapter. This was a bit frustrating at first, but suited the nature of the story. Around the mid-point, the Avengers finally begin getting the upper hand in their situations and can communicate again. It quickly becomes apparent that someone is orchestrating these crises.

What I loved about this book was that the author assumes the reader is familiar with the characters, either from comics or film, and dives right in. The characterizations are not limited to film or comics, and the story stands alone. The Avengers featured are the line-up from the recent Age of Ultron film, but their powers and personalities hue more to the comics and SHIELD is still active. Dr. Strange is mentioned but doesn’t appear.

One thing I did not like about the book is the price - these Marvel novels are ridiculously overpriced. The retail is $24.99, but these are very short books. The product page says 304 pages, but that is with a slightly larger font, bigger margins and a smaller format hardcover (see pics of the my copy). The actual length is probably more like a long novella - I read it in one evening. I actually like the physical design, but these should retail at $17.00 like YA novels do.

Overall, I loved this book and look forward to more of these novels as a way to expand my enjoyment of the Marvel Universe, but recommend that price conscious shoppers wait for mass market or buy it used. Highly recommended.

Chapter 3 (The Economics of Mutual Funds) and Chapter 4 (Mutual Fund Fees and Expenses) are worth the price of this book. Far too few investors understand the basic economics of the mutual fund industry and how that drives the behavior of fund managers.

There is a chapter that compares and contrasts mutual funds with ETF's which is very useful for investors who are just becoming aware of ETF's.

There is also a nice chapter on standard index funds vs. so-called 'enhanced index funds' such as those that follow fundamentally-based weighting strategies. This chapter also includes specific discussion of DFA's fund offerings. Given the large presence of DFA funds in the market, it is nice to see some objective discussions of their performance.

There is also an interesting chapter that compares the performance of active vs. passive funds from the Vanguard family over an extended period of time. The chapter fails to make a conclusive case for the superiority of one over the other, but it does a nice job of motivating how one goes about doing a good job of trying to judge active performance.

There is considerable discussion by both Haslem and Bogle on the need for better disclosure and more alignment of incentives between fund managers and their clients. If you have not encountered some of the discussions about how funds are run, the take-aways from these chapters will be quite eye opening.

The three chapters written by Morningstar's Philips and Kaplan provide a tour through the range of Morningstar's fund analysis tools and statistics. For fans of Morningstar, this will prove useful. The reader should, of course, be aware that Morningstar tends to promote actively managed funds over index funds and to take that into account when reading these chapters. In the Chapter titled Building a Portfolio of Mutual Funds, there is only one paragraph on expenses. Morningstar provides many useful tools--even at no cost--and I use these regularly. These three chapters seem perhaps more appropriate to a users manual for Morningstar than to a text that is designed to explain the ins and outs of mutual funds, however.

Given that most American's are relying on mutual funds to provide the basis for their retirement savings, it is very important for individuals and advisors to have a deeper understanding of these financial products. Mutual funds have greatly democratized the investing industry, giving even small investors access to diversified portfolios. This book explains a great deal about the industry from the persepctives of some of the most respected insiders and critics in the field. As such, I highly endorse this book.

As a final note, I must say that this book is not aimed at individual investors in the way that much of William Bernstein's writing is. There is no question that the intended auidence is more practitioner and academically oriented. As such, the reader should be prepared for the fact that the writing may come across as somewhat dry in some sections. This does not detract from the books value, however. I would suggest that the educated mutual fund investor seriously consider having this book as a reference volume.

Great book for an academic review of mutual funds

This book is a compilation of articles on mutual funds by written by university professors and industry analysts.
The content is based on the results of academic studies of the mutual fund industry with varied advice/theories as to how an individual investor can maximize returns. Be advised that each article is based on the 'biases' of the individual authors, so your own critical analysis is needed to determine what's the best plan for managing your mutual fund investments. All in all, I learned a lot and think it's worth reading.
