Almost a five star book but...

I wanted to give this book five stars, I really like it, but it needs an index! No excuse these days when they are so easy to create...
That glaring flaw aside it's a great read, entertaining and informative.
Dan Appleman's courses on PluralSight are excellent, too.

Great for people already familiar with other languages

Great book.
Much of the book is spent on ways to think about how to use the platform rather than on syntax and basic things any programmer should already know.
The focus on how to think about things on the platform helps someone new to it come away with tons of tools that could have taken years to learn the proper way of handling things.
Many things can be done on the Salesforce platform but this book teaches you the proper way to approach problems and provides multiple solutions so that you are not just writing code that will have problems later.

Must Read - full of valuable information.

Great book! This really helped me come from a background of C#/Java object oriented programming and really introduced me to the Governor Limit approach to apex programming. Not only did he outline each limitation in great detail, walking through various scenarios that you may hit, but provided solutions and various coding structures to help me resolve those issues I could face. Lots of the structures in here were the base for many of the templates me and my team uses on a daily basis. Truly a great breakdown of the struggles you will face moving from a traditional object oriented programming language to the force.com platform. Plan on reading it a 3rd time just to see if there is anything I missed!
