Among Mediums: A Scientist's Quest for Answers, by Julie Beischel PhD

Can psychic mediums really talk to the dead? Following the suicide of her mother and an evidential mediumship reading, Dr. Julie Beischel forfeited a potentially lucrative career in the pharmaceutical industry to pursue rigorous scientific research with mediums full-time. Among Mediums is an accessible, bite-sized review of her 10-year journey and the answers she discovered along the way. Her writing is concise, non-technical, conversational, and entertaining. In Among Mediums, Dr. Beischel discusses her research investigating the accuracy and specificity of information reported by mediums; unique aspects of mediums’ experiences, psychology, and physiology; and the potentially useful social applications of mediumship readings in fields including bereavement, end-of-life care, and forensics. All sales support independent research.

Praise for Among Mediums...

“Dr. Julie Beischel is a courageous, innovative pioneer who has brought immense respectability to a controversial area. If you think modern science has proved beyond doubt the finality of physical death, think again. Dr. Beischel’s research with mediums strongly suggests that our destiny is not as morbid as we’ve been led to believe. Her research points like an arrow to an aspect of consciousness that survives. Her contribution is huge, because throughout human history the terror of death’s finality has caused more suffering than all the physical diseases combined. The research in Among Mediums helps annul this fear. This book, then, is about hope, which in our materialistic age has been in short supply.
In the telling, Beischel has established a new genre: science-and-humor. Who said writing about dead people has to be morose and gruesome? Chesterton said, ‘It is a test of a good religion whether you can make a joke about it.’ Perhaps it should be a test of good science, too. If so, Beischel passes the test with high marks. Be prepared to laugh. This, dear reader, is science writing at its best.”
–Larry Dossey, MD
Author of The One Mind

“Easy to read and understand and with a light-hearted touch, Beischel’s book is a wonderful introduction to the application of science to a human experience that is thousands of years old yet which has been ignored or dismissed by most of the scientific community. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in mediumship, in the mounting evidence for life after death, in the very real potential for mediums in the grieving process, and in how science can be applied to the so-called paranormal.”
–Prof. Loyd Auerbach , MS
Atlantic University & JFK University

“Dr. Beischel has managed to unlock many of the mysteries surrounding mediumship and explain the common misconceptions about the process. Perhaps even more important than the scientific research are her queries about its implications and how the knowledge can be used for the betterment of humanity.”
–Robert Ginsberg
Vice-president, Forever Family Foundation

“This is the finest and clearest piece you will find on this subject matter as it illuminates with humor and expertise the thorniest issues everybody is afraid to ask about survival. Probably no one has done as much detailed scientific research as Dr. Beischel in such an original way. Her results are unquestionably authentic and her unique direction unparalleled. I could not recommend this read and this research more unreservedly. With my many years of work in the arena of grief healing, I can tell you Beischel’s work will transform our understanding of the freedom from fear that is available to all of us.”
–Samadhi Longo-Disse, M.Div, STM, PhD
Grief Counseling Professional

“Finally, a book about mediums that explains real science and does not require matching t-shirts or a clever acronym! Smart girls ROCK!!”
–Katie Mullaly
Co-author with J. Patrick Ohlde of Scare-izona and Paranormal Pandemic

From Blind Faith to Conviction
By Michael E. Tymn
In the epigraph heading up Chapter 1 of this short and concise but absorbing book, Professor James Hyslop, a dedicated psychologist and psychical researcher of a century ago, is quoted as asking, in effect, why science aimed at discovering man's origin is considered so honorable while science aimed at determining where man goes after death is seen as so dishonorable. It was so "dishonorable" that when Hyslop, while teaching ethics and logic at Colombia University, showed an interest in psychical research one of his academic colleagues tried to have him fired.

Dr. Julie Beischel, the author of this book, has likely asked that same question many times during her 10 years of research with mediums. At least, Hyslop had a little company in his research with mediums. Beischel is much more a loner in that respect.

Although Hyslop and a number of other esteemed scholars and scientists of that era who closely studied some credible mediums found an abundance of evidence strongly suggesting the humans survive death in another realm or dimension of existence, and even offered some clues as to what the "afterlife" is like, mainstream scientists and academicians turned up their noses at their findings, seeing it all as a retreat to the superstitions and follies of organized religion rather than "progress" - progress meaning acceptance of a materialistic philosophy holding that we are nothing but atoms and molecules marching toward an abyss of nothingness.

Ironically, even orthodox religion rejected survival research, probably because some of the findings of the pioneers of psychical research conflicted with established dogma and doctrine, thereby threatening the authority and wisdom of Church leaders.

It has been only in the last 15 or so years that a few courageous scientists have risked showing any interest in studying mediumship and picking up where those esteemed researchers of yesteryear left off. Dr. Beischel is one of those few.

As Beischel states in the first chapter, the book is not for academics, although they, too, might learn something. "This is a book for people who are interested in what science has to say about modern mediums," she explains. "It's for people who have seen what television producers imagine appeals to the public and who now want the real story."

Unlike many scientists and academicians, Beischel doesn't beat around the bush in stuffy language with a half dozen references listed after every sentence. She gets right to the point, often injecting a little humor in her discussion of her research. She quotes George Bernard Shaw, who said, "Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh."

In Chapter 2, she explains how she became interested in mediums, telling of her first (and only) mediumship reading. "I felt strangely normal for having just spoken with my dead mother," she writes. "I decided that the only thing weird about the experience was that somehow it wasn't weird at all. It felt very real and very normal." In Chapter 3, she discusses the scientific methodology used in her studies and in Chapter 4, she offers details and results of her research while also examining arguments that to some extent conflict with the survival hypothesis. In Chapter 5, she presents her findings on the personality characteristics of her research mediums, noting a number of peculiarities among them. I found her findings relative to how the information comes in to the medium rather than the medium reaching out to acquire it especially interesting. In the final two chapters, Beischel gets into the practical application of the research and areas to be further explored.

As Hyslop and other researchers came to realize, we will never get absolute proof of an afterlife; in fact, such proof might very well conflict with the purpose of our lives. However, such research as carried out by Hyslop 100 years ago and Beischel today helps us move from blind faith and fear to true faith/conviction and peace of mind. .

Insightful science on something so important
By Kevin Bohacz - bestselling techno-thriller author
I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in survival of consciousness after bodily death. This book is as much for those grieving as it is for those seeking answers as it is for those looking for objective data. This book impressed me as much by what was in it as by what was not in it. The author takes great pains to remain as objective and scientific as possible. There is very little subjective material other than that required for full disclosure by the author. In this effort to remain as objective as possible, the author goes far above and beyond what you'd normally find in a book reporting on any scientific investigation. She has to go the extra mile because her topic is something that the scientific establishment has a hard time dealing with. I am a physicist and as such know how hard a pill this kind of medicine can be to shallow because as scientists we are forced to stretch our minds in a direction we are not accustom to going. The mental muscles have become a little too inflexible with age. I am also a young widower and so the material in this book is of great importance to me. This book is a breath of fresh air injected into a field of study that is all too often populated by people who are so ridged, defensive, and diatomic in their "beliefs." I am speaking of both the dogma of professional skepticism on one side and the dogma of pseudoscience on the other side. Ultimately this is a question that cannot be answered fully by science until science opens its framework to include new discoveries.

A much needed voice
By D.
With the public conversation becoming more open about questions surrounding the survival of consciousness, it's important to have informed voices join the discussion to provide some grounding. It was an absolute pleasure to see that Julie Beischel had written this e-book introducing her work to the world, and more importantly it was an absolute pleasure to read!

At the moment Windbridge is one of the few scientific institutes in the United States that has the courage to conduct these kinds of experiments despite the vocal protestations of skeptics that such things as mediumship are simply "impossible." It would probably surprise many that in South America and the United Kingdom there are a number of researchers working in mediumship studies, and producing fascinating insights into human consciousness. Along with so many other areas of contemporary progress, this too is one of the areas where the United States is falling far behind.

As is readily seen in Among Mediums: A Scientist's Quest for Answers, this is not the fault of those scientists in the U.S. who continue to pursue the work, despite the lack of funding and potential backlash from the academic establishment. In my work as a writer I have been fortunate to meet and talk with the leading scientists in this field, and the work being conducted at Windbridge is some of the most exciting and accessible I've encountered.

What makes this book different from others seeking to bring the scientific study of these liminal areas to public light is Julie herself. The work is prefaced with the fact that she is going to present things as she would to someone sitting down to coffee with her, and in the same easy manner she makes you forget that what she is describing is "impossible" by our current cultural standards. Better yet, you forget because the science behind what she is saying is sound.

If you are looking for an introduction to the current research in mediumship and the survival question this is the place to start.

Full disclosure: I am a supporting member of the Windbridge Institute for all of the reasons that I've stated above.
