The battle for the World Chess Championship has witnessed numerous titanic struggles which have engaged the interest not only of chess enthusiasts but also of the public at large. The chessboard is the ultimate mental battleground and the world champions themselves are supreme intellectual gladiators.
These magnificent compilations of chess form the basis of the first two parts of Garry Kasparov's definitive history of the World Chess Championship. Garry Kasparov, who is universally acclaimed as the greatest chessplayer ever, subjects the play of his predecessors to a rigorous analysis.

Part one features the play of champions Wilhelm Steinitz (1886-1894), Emanuel Lasker (1894-1921), Jose Capablanca (1921-1927) and Alexander Alekhine (1927-1935 and 1937-1946).

Part two features the play of champions Max Euwe (1935-1937) Mikhail Botvinnik (1946-1957, 1958-1961 and 1961-1963), Vassily Smyslov (1957-1958) and Mikhail Tal (1960-1961).

These books are more than just a compilation of the games of these champions. Kasparov's biographies place them in a fascinating historical, political and cultural context. Kasparov explains how each champion brought his own distinctive style to the chessboard and enriched the theory of the game with new ideas.

All these games have been thoroughly reassessed with the aid of modern software technology and the new light this sheds on these classic masterpieces is fascinating.

EXTRACT FROM STEINITZ CHAPTER:Steinitz was born in a Prague ghetto, into the family of a petty hardware merchant, in which he was child number thirteen(!). He learned chess by watching his father playing. After finishing school in the mid-fifties, he continued his education in Vienna, which had ancient chess traditions (it is sufficient to recall the names of Allgaier, Hamppe and Falkbeer). When in London and Paris the fame of Morphy and Andersen was at its height, in a small Vienna café a certain poor student was making a living by playing for stakes...

Book Review in process
By E. Griswold
Last night I began a review of Garry Kasparov’s volume one of “My Great Predecessors,” but I didn’t finish or even time-stamp it. Oh well, it was sometime early in the evening or perhaps even late in the afternoon. The point is that I will finish the review sooner than I will finish the book. As of this writing, I am on page 11. To be honest, I did a quick read of some bits of the chapters, but only to whet my appetite. This book alone is a massive undertaking, and I am talking of only the first volume! The page numbers end at 464 and the print isn’t large, so it resembles a college text-book in many ways. The book is historical and informative, yet not really a tome. I have been following the story of chess since 1968 and Garry has revealed even more than few surprises to my absolute delight. So now I return to page 11, soon to turn to page 12, and immerse my mind into the history of the struggle which began before the 1600’s.

A REMARKABLE AND PROFOUND WORK BY KASPAROV. THE ACT ...
By JOSE A RODRIGUEZ
A REMARKABLE AND PROFOUND WORK BY KASPAROV. THE ACT OF READING BECOMES MORE THAN INTERESTING. THERE ARE MANY ASPECTS THAT I WAS FAR FROM SUSPECTING. KASPAROV ALSO GRASPED ON THE PSICOLOGY OF THOSE MASTERS, THE FATHERS OF THE MODERN CHESS.

It is great reading.
By Murray Eiland
After reading this book it is impossible to see the game of chess the same way. The characters of early players are compared and contrasted with their game. It is great reading.
