Grade 2-4-Picking up where Ramona Forever (Morrow, 1984) left off, Cleary gives her readers a much-awaited gem with this consistent and expressive look into the world of this beloved character. Here, eager readers find out just how well Ramona adjusts to being a big sister and a fourth grader. Irrepressible as always, she does not fail to satisfy with her antics. Beezus is in high school-getting her ears pierced, baby-sitting, and going to parties with boys-while baby Roberta is, well, busy being a baby. Ramona makes a best friend, falls through an attic ceiling, is a responsible baby-sitter, and struggles with spelling. Once again, Tiegreen provides well-chosen and well-placed black-and-white line drawings throughout. The story concludes with Ramona's 10th birthday, or "zeroteenth" as she is pleased to note. Ramona's back -- almost

Beverly Cleary's latest foray into Ramona's world is a welcome addition to her series, but the book isn't quite the joyful reunion one might expect. Ramona doesn't seem the same somehow; she still gets into scrapes, but her new adventures don't come across quite as vividly or seem as catastrophic as her old ones did. Having trouble keeping track of a baby and a cat at the same time could happen to anyone, but only Ramona could dye herself blue in Howie's sink or decide to wear her pajamas to school, as she did in previous books. Maybe Cleary is trying to show that Ramona is growing up a little, or maybe she just had trouble getting back inside her head (it has been a long time since the last book).
The whole feel of the book was a little different, maybe because Cleary modernized the setting a bit or even because the Quimbys seem to have gotten past their financial troubles. The older books were a nice mix of Ramona's escapades and her relationship with her family. There was a real "times may be tough but we'll get through it together" sort of feeling in previous books, and while there is a family component to this one (especially Ramona trying to adjust to her new role as the middle child), this book doesn't deal as much with the Quimbys trying to get along as a family. The issues (except for the financial ones) don't seem to have changed, either. Beezus is still trying to deal with her "good" image and grow up at the same time, and Ramona is still trying to deal with the fact that she's not Beezus.
Unfortunately, the school scenes aren't as well developed as they could be, either. Ramona's rivalry with Susan still comes into play, but there aren't any spectacular owl-crushing incidents. She also has to deal with Yard Ape, but he's almost nice now. Her new friend Daisy is not very memorable, and Howie is largely absent from the book. Ramona has a new teacher to deal with, too, which is always important, but she doesn't compare to the others, either in personality or in her run-ins with Ramona. It's Ramona's world, all right, but maybe not quite the way you remember it.
The same goes for the illustrations. Alan Tiegreen, who did most of the other Ramona books, has illustrated this one as well. These drawings are less detailed than some of the earlier ones, at times almost cartoonish. Still, it's great to have Tiegreen back too, because seeing another artist's image of Ramona would be strange at this point.
Although it's not the best of the bunch, _Ramona's World_ is a must read for Cleary fans, old and young. It's great to see Ramona again.

This book is wonderful! I was the first one to buy it atTarget. I am 12 years old and could not keep my eyes of it. I read itin 2 days flat! I will add this book to my collection. I will alsogive my collection of B. Cleary books to my kids. these books are a treasure to me. I know it sounds silly but these books like "The Paper Route" were all great books that helped me cope threw life where i'm at. These books are so down to earth. Thats why i like them so much! I recommend these books any day to kids my age and even the librarian. If Beverly Cleary is listening keep up the good work your excellant! i would give more stars or thumbs up but they only let me have 5 stars or thumbs up. It would be imposible for me to say that i have a favorate book by her. I admire here corage to keep righting books. keep righting them Beverly. A little dissapointed!

I own all the ramona books and have read them over and over again since grade school. Before I read ramonas world, I went through and read all the previous books in order starting from beezus and ramona, when ramona is in nursery school, through to ramona forever and then ramona's world. In Ramona's world, it seems as though Cleary has not delved too deep into Ramona's thought process and feelings as she does in other books. Furthermore, there seems to be a huge jump in personalities among all the characters from ramona forever to ramonas world. In certain parts of the book it almost seems as some of the things ramona and daisy feel/think are almost too mature for 9-10 year olds. Beezus is also much more outgoing and quite a bit more snippy towards ramona then she has been in previous books where she is quiet, sensible, and always with her nose in a book. Although Cleary is trying to show how these kids are growing up, Ramona's world is much too sudden a jump. The book does not introduce a gradual transition for Beezus and Ramona in attitudes and maturity. Also Yard ape, who in Ramona age 8 was a gum smacking, ball kicking, getting into trouble type of kid, is now quiet and very smart, and suddenly very nice.
Lastly, another aspect of the book which sets it apart from the others, is that in previous ramona books, Cleary mostly tells the story in the 3rd person perspective, whereas in Ramona's world, it is mostly in the 2nd person perspective which explains why it reads so differently from previous books.

Kept me interested for the most part

This book kept me interested and the premise was intriguing. There were some good plot twists and turns, and the author had clearly done her research about certain elements. However, the writing style was difficult at times--very much telling rather than showing. The reader was always told how the characters felt, and some of the characters, such as Chrissie's father and aunt, felt like one-dimensional evil characters. I would have preferred a bit more depth and nuance in the characterisation and storytelling.

THE LETTER by Kathryn Hughes, performed by Rachel Atkins is truly spellbinding! The most captivating, moving and emotional audiobook I have ever read (listened to)—from secrets, loss, pain, sacrifice, and love.

A story of two women whose lives become entwined when one discovers a letter that was written in 1939 but never sent. (never posted; not online posted, but postmarked-stamped). Two powerful stories connect; fate steps in; across history, time, and oceans- for an explosive reunion; a love story so profound- mesmerizing; leaving you utterly speechless when you reach the end; a novel and characters, you will remember long after the book ends.

As the novel begins present day, we hear from a granddaughter and grandmother while visiting in the lovely garden, pulling weeds, (symbols for people in our lives-everything belongs). Readers then hear a tragic and heartbreaking story, told from the loving grandmother; her story, how she met the love of her life- as events unfold, which changed her life.

From Manchester in 1973, the story begins with Tina Craig, a young woman married to a violent and evil man, Rick her husband-controlling, a drunk, lost his job, he drinks, smokes, and gambles and beats her. He has two personalities ranging from good to evil. She has been desperately saving her money in order to escape and leave him; as she has no family or anywhere to turn; however, he finds her money in the coffee can, and now she is doomed once again.

Tina has a wonderful caring friend, Graham at work, and he is worried about her. She also works at a charity shop volunteering and enjoys her customers, where she is not worried about everything she says or does. Her husband gives her money to bet (turns out, it was her coffee money); however, she does not do so, but her friend Graham places the bet for her and wins. He gives her the money, and she offers it to her husband and keeps the part she had saved, and moves out. She is finally happy. The race, March 31, 1973 Grand National horse racing, sealed her fate.

However, Rick cleans up his act, gets a job and quits drinking. He wants her back and says he has changed. She wants so much for a family. She is torn and unsure if he has really changed, but she finds herself pregnant from the last violent time he raped her. When she goes back to pick up her clothes, he slowly turns on the charm and talks her into coming back. Her friends do not share in the joy, as they are very suspicious of Rick, doubting he has really has changed. It works for a while; however, soon thereafter his old ways return. She is afraid for her life and her unborn baby. He is drinking again and this time his violence is the worst ever, leaving her for dead, and baby?

The reason for his anger, is due to The Letter. He finds a letter in her purse. A love letter. Drunk, jealous, and enraged. However, little does he know the letter was one Tina found in one of her customer’s coat pockets; a special love letter from over thirty some years earlier from a solider going off to war, to his pregnant girlfriend.

Tina, now broken and alone, is haunted by the letter, obsessed with finding this Billy and his love. If she cannot be happy, she needs to someone to be. Why didn’t Billy post the letter? Chrissie, the pregnant intended recipient never received this letter. Are they still even alive? Little does Tina know this letter will later change the course of her own life. What became of this couple torn apart? Tina is moved by the contents of the letter but also puzzled as why such a heartfelt message was left in a pocket. She vows to find out what became of Billy and Chrissie.

The second story is of a young woman and man, we meet later in the book, back in 1939- Billy and Chrissie. They are in love. Chrissie’s controlling father, a doctor (one evil cold man), does not like Billy, the boy she is dating.

When Chrissie tells Billy she is pregnant he is overwhelmed due to the war, and the economy and unsure about their financial future. He leaves; however, later that evening, he begins to regret his harsh words and writes a letter to Chrissie. 4th September 1939. One of love. He declares his love and asks for her hand in marriage. When he stops by her house the next day the father informs him, she does not wish to see him. (Of course, she is unaware of any of this).

Billy tells her father he has written her a letter and since the postal service is having issues, the father says he will deliver the letter, but he does not. He puts the letter in a coat pocket which is found years later by a woman. Chrissie is heartbroken, wondering why Billy has deserted her.

Of course, the controlling father will not allow his daughter to bring shame upon the family name, so sends her off to a commune to live with hateful evil nuns and is forced to give up the baby. Her mother, dad, and aunt turned their back on her. Her baby is adopted by Americans. Two young women's lives destroyed by evil men and separated from their babies.

Years later the boy, now a man has always wondered about his biological parents, so sets off to England to find answers. Chrissie (the biological mother)’s life in England is left empty of the life taken away from her so cruelly.

In his search abroad, William runs into Tina working at the library, and tells her of his search for his birth mother and father. She has The Letter which will connect the two stories. The two of them, strangers, begin the search for the owners of the letter, William’s parents to solve the mystery of a past life.

A letter which caused the death of one child, and the saving grace for another. When the two storylines connect, it is one of the most powerful reunions. Ordinary women who overcome extraordinary heartache. A beautiful poignant ending.

Wow, I am not an emotional person; however, here I was traveling, driving in rush hour traffic with iPod, with tears rolling down my face, to the point I could barely see. The reunion scene was the most emotional and vivid scene, making you feel as though you were there. Rachel Atkins' performance was award-winning, even her voice was broken, and cracking, as she was speaking. I was literally hanging on every word, feeling the powerful emotion, pain, and feelings.

Hughes and Atkins were in perfect sync. Hughes writing is amazing, and the way she created both storylines with pitch perfect pacing, and fabulous character development. Please, let this be the narrator for the next book. While in Costco, I finished the book, and re-listened to the last four chapters on the way home once again. It is that powerful; highly recommend the audio version.

Not sure how I missed this stunning book along the way, however, I stumbled upon the audiobook (released May 7, 2015) on Audible and was hooked the first five minutes to the end. Could not put it down until I finished. (Oct 18, 2015 Paperback)

Hard to believe this is a debut! Can understand why it hit number one on the Amazon Kindle Chart, spending 130 days in the top 100 with 2,000 reader reviews. I have since read, world rights including film have been attained from this self-published book (I want a front row seat), and cannot wait for her second book, coming in 2016. A definite pre-order. Kathryn Hughes has a rare talent, and trust me when I say, this gal can write and oh, can Rachel Atkins perform!

A thought-provoking novel, The Letter, a story of two women, born decades apart, whose paths are destined to cross and how one woman's devastation leads to the other's salvation. My Top 30 AudioBooks of 2015, Hughes has been added to my favorite author list. SCORE 5 Stars+

Mainly got the book because I got it as a teenager and it was also a book I purchased in Germany under a different author's name. Considered fairly racy (old word) for its time. Story was actually better than I remembered. Probably a better nostalgic purchase than anything else.

Absolutely recommend it

***Possibly some spoilers ahead***

It’s not my style to review a book I enjoyed by trashing another one I didn’t, but this needs to be said so please bear with me: a few days ago I was reading a collection of holiday romance stories and my biggest complaint was the fact that the male main character was always the same type of rich manwhore jerk with issues--every single story had a slightly different version of this guy and I was so fed up. Other thing these stories had in common was how the main characters would look at each other once and immediately nothing else occupied their minds except the idea of tearing each other's clothes and do the dirty all night long. This was a holiday themed book and honestly none of these stories cheered me up or put me in a Christmas mood, because, really, jerks and sex? Is that what holiday romance has come to?

That said, His Christmas Gift by Sarah Mayberry totally restored my faith in the genre because oh my goodness, it made me laugh and cry and feel all the things in between and I wish it was Christmas already so I could put up my tree and daydream about nice, good-looking, plaid clad lumberjacks. This is how you holiday romance, people!

I absolutely loved the hero, Sawyer, a big, humble, kind-hearted and shy tree farmer who may come off as grumpy at first but who is really not, and, sweet baby Jesus, I swooned so much over this guy throughout the whole story, SO MUCH. The way he cares so much for his sister, the way he takes care of Jenna, the other main character of this story, when she's sick and has to stay at his house, the way he doesn't think he has a chance with her but still wants to impress her and runs to town to cut his hair and buy new shirts, the way he cooks for her and tries to distract her from scratching her smallpox blisters, gaaah, he's so cute, honestly I could keep gushing about this character until I doubled the size of this paragraph, I really could. Nothing beats a nice guy who actually treats a girl right, nothing. I'll take Sawyer over brooding millionaires any day.

What also impressed me about this story was the fact that there is an actual story going on, and how the whole thing is not just about the couple getting together and the sexy parts--there's this whole situation going on with Sawyer's sister, Lacey, who just got out of jail and is struggling with so much regret and guilt, there’s the brother&sister relationship which needs some patching up, there's Jenna's own situation with her family and personal demons, her so natural growing friendship with Lacey, and of course the Jenna and Sawyer slow-burn--all this in this small book. It's remarkable. (Also, Sawyer with a broken leg! I shouldn’t say this was adorable BUT there’s something about the idea of a big, strong, extremely physical guy who is so used to do everything by himself and who suddenly can’t because he needs to slow down, keep his leg up, walk with crutches and accept help from others in general-–there is something awfully endearing about this situation, but I admit I’m still a terrible person for saying so.)

I really enjoyed the writing, especially the witty dialogues, Jenna and Sawyer’s easy banter was deliciously addictive, I found myself smiling like an idiot most of the time. It’s extraordinary how they go from barely saying hi to each other, to having long talks about silly things, about serious things, about themselves, and how it never felt forced. I’ll definitely check out other books by Sarah Mayberry.

I’m participating in a holiday read-a-thon at the moment, hence this book, and when I finished it, and for the sake of meeting my goals, I started reading another one immediately, and let me tell you guys, I’m totally going through a book hangover, reading this new story with new characters, the whole time wishing I still had Sawyer and Jenna to read about.

I was a bit underwhelmed

First impression is cute, predictable, slow simmer, uhm and the L word got dropped pretty quickly after they consummated their relationship which I thought was a little weird but it was a good story. Totally in the whole Christmas spirit. There’s this thing that authors do that I noticed in my reading… I don’t know if I’m getting technical or if I’m dissecting the crap outta this book but… So when authors want to evoke a strong emotional reaction from a character or a reader, what they do is they put them in close quarters for extended periods of time because that forces an attachment faster. Now I’ve read this many times in books. Many, many, many times and I’ve noticed it’s become a pattern. It’s very predictable and while it’s not a bad thing, it’s not always a good thing either.

I may be way off (or a little bitchy) but to me that shows a bit of laziness in the writing. I understand why the author does it and I understand that in some instances it is necessary but it didn’t have to be that way them for them to have that kind of emotional connection. They could have had the same amount of connection with being confined so closely, to me that was a negative on the book. I took away another star for predictability. Man, I’m kinda mean today huh?

Other than that it was a cute story, it had a great pace. I didn’t really connect with Sawyer as much as I connected with Jenna. He seemed too gruff and not emotive enough if that makes sense. He didn’t express himself well, I thought. I suspect that was the authors intention but I didn’t like it.

But I tell you what: the sex scene was….Whoa! Really good, like smoking hot!

I will probably read more Christmas books by her because it comes every year. But for now I think I am gonna try some other ones.

Loved it, laughed and cried.

There are a few things I need to say about His Christmas Gift by Sarah Mayberry. Number one and foremost this is a 5 stars book. Any time a book moves me to tears, I know it is a great book. Without giving too much away, I will say Jenna’s reunion scene did exactly that. Besides that I learned to understand and appreciate Sawyer Gallagher. It is more than just being able to see his perspective on all that had happened to his baby sister, Sarah Mayberry fleshed him out so that he and Jenna too for that matter seemed earnestly real.

His Christmas Gift and Three Nights Before Christmas parallel each other perfectly. I don’t think I have ever read two books by different authors do it this well. I do think that fans of Sarah Mayberry my say that they just would want to read this book. Well, they easily could, it is self-contained enough to be a stand-alone. Honestly they would be cheating themselves since Kat Latham’s book is from Lacey’s point of view. It too is an excellent read. Since I consider them to be reasonably priced (all of Tule Publishing are great buys), it is certainly worth the investment. These are both stories that one would want to reread.

Needs better proof reading

This is my second purchase of the STANDARD CATALOG OF MILITARY FIREARMS, as I previously purchased the 6th edition. The 7th edition's coverage of the M1 Garand again mentions CMP rifles (p. 462), but leaves out the $ values by condition. CMP is an important category and I for one would like to know the values. Also in the Webley revolver coverage (p. 210), the photo associated with the Mark VI continues the error seen in the 6th edition. The Mark VI has a squared off butt (and is mentioned), but the photo shows the birds head butt of an earlier MK. Also regarding the Webley, there is no mention of the * or ** naval expedients produced during WWI.

I've also noted similar errors in the larger STANDARD CATALOG OF FIREARMS that I have purchased. In the future and while copies are available at our library, I'll not be purchasing either of these Krause Publications; at least until the attention for detail is improved.

Very good reference book.

This is the third edition of this book I have owned and find it indispensable to information on military firearms. It use as a value guide is on par to all others, but as with all others means very little in any particular sale. I didn't think this edition was a carefully put together as previous issues in that frequently information overlaps awkwardly between pages and in some cases improperly placed. It isn't difficult to figure it out but makes is awkward.

My concerns about Kode not loving Tria as much as Rain, were unfounded - a few spoilers contained in this review

I really liked Kode, the hero in this book and surprisingly Tria, the heroine, who I did not like in the last book. Tria played a villain of shorts in the prior stories.

I was concerned because Kode thought he was in love with Rain Noles during the 3rd book since he was 13 years old. I prefer my heroes think that the heroines are the love of their lives and that no other woman has gotten close to inspiring feels of love and protectiveness. To make things more complicated Rain was Tria's sister. I was glad that was not an issue. I felt like he proved to Tria and anyone else that she was the only woman that he ever loved and Rain was just a crush.

It helped in my mind that Kode acted like a jealous, possessive alpha man when other men showed interest in Tria, to an extent he never showed to towards Rain. He totally overacted and I loved it. It lead not only to hot sex scenes but some funny moments. Even while Kode thought that he was in love with Rain during the 3rd book he continued to have sex with other women. Since being with Tria, which happens during the beginning of the book, Kode never slept with anyone else nor wanted to, which to me was telling.

Even though Rain was Kode's best friend in the prior books, they did not act that way as much as they did in the last book and I was glad about it. There was not that closeness between them anymore. They did not sleep over at each other's houses anymore, which I thought was the way it should be now that they had each had the person they loved in their life. Tria always felt second fiddle next to Rain, the "good" sister. In her opinion and based on the history we are given I agree with her, Kode and other Sterlings did not even see her when around Rain, who was friends with most of the Sterling men. In fact, growing up they all treated Tria poorly because of the way she sometimes treated Raine. In my opinion it was understandable that Tria felt insecure at first about Kode wanting Rain more, at least in the beginning of their relationship. At the end of the story there was no doubt who Kode loved. I wished for a HEA but new that it would be more of a HFN based on prior books in the series and the fact that there are more books to follow, which I will be reading.

Kode and Tria are by far my favorite couple from all the Sterling Shore Series

I've reread LOVING WAR a few times since I purchased it. Kode and Tria are by far my favorite couple from all the Sterling Shore Series! There is something so sweet and vulnerable about their romance. The combination of discovery of love and the humor that came along with it, makes this book an amazing story. I really loved the POV of both the protagonist and how they seamlessly transition back and forth to give you the most of each scene. I've read a lot of series where the male protagonists and female protagonists all start feeling the same book after book, but Kode and Tria are unique in their inner voices and personalities from all the other Sterling Shores couples. I really loved hearing Kode's constant reference to Tria as "my girl", lol definitely made me swoon ;). Excellent read!

Well move over Kade Colton!!! He was my #1 favorite book boyfriend of this series until, I read this story. I really thought Kode was always going to be my least favorite and he just jumped to my #1 spot!!!! I laughed so much through this book. Kode and Tria's relationship is just full of love and lots of letting go and having fun. C.M. Owens has definitely done it again with this one and, I am looking forward to the next book in this series :)
