Blackbeard's Revenge starts up about a year after the first book left off. And things weren't looking especially bright for Edward Thatch and his merry crew of buccaneers. And things don't seem to have gotten much better over the course of the time that occurs between books.

Blackbeard, the man who rides on the majestic ship FREEDOM, as much more than merely a metaphor for his own personal quest, seems to have given up on the idea of being free.

Good thing pirates don't care about things like that!

Okay, let's get down to the gritty. This book is a ton more polished than the first one, and is incredibly fast-paced, considering how long of a book it is. And although there's a ton that happens within the covers of this title, it never seems to get bogged down with too much at any given moment. In fact, Edward seems to be rather singularly focused at most times in the novel, giving him a rather Ahab-esque vibe, which, to be fair, is probably the point.

We see Edward's progress towards being the captain he's supposed to be, but also, more than anything else, see his failures, many of which come back to bite him in the whatsits, some more I'm guessing will do so in future tales of his adventures.

But in the end, this book is really all about family, and how sometimes, you just have to fight for your family, even if the battle seems completely doomed to failure.

This is a spectacular book, one that I think you absolutely should read if you have any interest in pirate fiction. Or action. Or adventure. Or...really, just read it, unless all you like are Harlequins (in which case, what are you doing reading this review even?)

Seriously. It's a load of fun.

Action packed and riveting, a must read sequel

We start out with Edward aka Blackbeard having been imprisoned for a year; a year in a dungeon without sun, the ocean or his love, Anne. As you can imagine things are a bit grim for Edward but then the tide turns. A jailbreak! Well written and devised this scene starts the book with the action you would expect from a rowdy crew of buccaneers and the action does not stop.

Now that Blackbeard has been reunited with his crew and his ship Freedom he becomes focused on obtaining the keys he needs to unlock the compartments on the ship he had purchased from Benjamin Hornigold. If you did not read the first book, please do, then this will make more sense. I am just kidding, I will tell you.

In the first book Edward wanted to be a whaler and purchased a ship while intoxicated during a card game from Benjamin Hornigold. Unbeknownst to Edward this was a pirate ship and was a catalyst to his becoming a pirate. On the ship there were several doors that remained locked and no matter what the crew tried they were unable to gain access. The doors were sealed with a magical protection and only the keys were able to open the doors. If Blackbeard wants access to those areas, which are actually vital areas, he needs to play Benjamin’s game and prove himself worthy. Yes, you should read the first book because it is just awesome and will help you with this book but I would not say it is necessary.

With his obsession of unlocking the doors revved into high gear, the Captain and crew must complete three tests to open all the doors aboard the Freedom and then Edward will be able to seek his retribution on those who have wronged him and his crew. I loved how the tests were devised! It was like Indiana Jones on the high seas. So well written and you will find yourself holding your breath praying for a good outcome. So well thought out and enjoyable!!

We also have more time to get to know the supporting characters that we met in the first book. The backstories on the crew are comedic, tragic, and add a flavor to the overall book that just makes it a pleasure to read. Henry is still a loyal best friend but we see that there are just some situations that can lead any man to break and make choices that we as a reader dread. Anne has made her choices and is by Edward’s side and has been well and truly written off by her family…which actually bodes badly for her and those around her. Sam has a deeper role in this book and is pivotal to the storyline because his past becomes part of the present for all aboard Freedom. This addition to the story also takes it from fiction to fantasy and is done in a creative manner that will have you engrossed in the details.

This is not the light-hearted crew that we had known. Edward has changed and his choices have led the crew into dangerous situations with more than one tragic consequence. With each loss Edward’s soul is marked and he becomes darker and more what we come to expect from Blackbeard. The book is action packed and riveting. The writing is remarkable and the will have a lasting impact.

Jeremy McLean has a way of drawing me into his books. I was never a big reader before, but this book locked me in and I could not stop reading it until it was over. This book is the runner up to Blackbears's Freedom. The writing style is vary unique and it puts you in the mood of the time and flow of the story. very well done indeed. The story contains some violence and is definitely more intense than the first in the series, however, it is not an overabundance and does not take away from the theme. There is no sexual content in this book which is truly refreshing. Modern authors seem to think that in order to make a story great, they need to add an abundance of sexual content. That is not, however, how Jeremy presents his books and therefore creates a certain quality that I feel most books are missing. Jeremy's books excel above a great number books in the market. I would give this book ten stares if possible. The only complaint I have is that there is no third book yet!

All in all a great job. Keep up the great work Jeremy!

Excellent Textbook-Elsevier service Sucks

There is no issue with the quality of this text-one of the classics of diagnostic ultrasound.

However gaining access to the 242 video clips shown in the book is an absolute nightmare. Elsevier has this opaque,time consuming rigamarole to register purchase and to create access to the video clip. Anyone who scans knows how much these clips add to the material presented in the text.

Unfortunately,Elsevier has a silly system with a bookscratch code like a lottery ticket,multiple registration pages, all of which fail to permit access. Fill out all the forms then wait several days for a sales rep to call you!! For a book you've already purchased for $320USD???????

Pretty sad! As a result- I would have to downgrade Rumacks 4th Ed to a 4 star item. This flaw does reflect directly upon the quality and usefulness of this edition,so long as easy access is blocked from the substantial educational material contained in the innaccesible video clips. Hopefully the editor will find a new publisher more responsive to its customers for the subsequent editions. (I have owned the 1st and 2nd editions of this text,btw.)

1/26/12 Update: Interestingly the Feb 2012 RSNA publication RADIOLOGY, also has high praise for the 4th ED, while being critical of the online activation rigamarole . ( [...] ) Subscription required for full review.

Interesting But Problematic Stage Adaptation of the Famous Film

First a 1959 drama for television's celebrated "Playhouse 90" and then 1961 star-studded and Academy Award-winning motion picture, JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG was the first widely-seen American drama to make a serious examination of the Holocaust--a horror that until then had been somewhat swept under the rug of American conciousness. And it was all the more disturbing for its use of Army Signal Corps film of Nazi atrocities, film that had not been widely seen up to that point. In its time, it was both shocking and to a certain extent politically controversial.

It was also the script for which writer Abby Mann (1927-2008), who won an Oscar for it, is best recalled. In 2001 Mann re-worked the material for the stage, and JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG opened on Broadway in March of that year. Although it was generally praised, it was also criticized as too talky and too slow moving; the public was not greatly enthusiastic; and the play closed after fifty-six performance. Although it has been widely produced since, it has since had better reception on the regional stage.

In a sense, JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG is a courtroom drama plain and simple. In the aftermath of World War II, numerous Nazi officials were placed on trial for war crimes and crimes against humanity, and the play depicts one of the last such trials--a trial of four judges who are accused of working with the Nazis to pervert justice and accomplish political aims. At this particular point in time, however, such trials have become a political thorn for the United States: The Soviet Union is moving deeper into Europe, and America suddenly feels the need of Germany as ally. Ultimately, the play creates a situation in which both prosecutor Col. Parker and Judge Haywood must not only grapple with degrees of guilt and responsibility but with the dangers of political expediency as well.

I am a great fan of the 1961 film and I wanted very much to like this stage adaptation--and so I do, but with several major reservations. It seems to me that the play is very slow to start and somewhat awkward in its construction; it also seems to me that a number of Mann's changes between the screenplay and the stage script are extremely ill-advised. But in fairness I must note that plays are written to be performed, not read, and it is often extremely difficult to grasp how a play performs from a reading of the script. This may be the case here.

Good but only short version of another

As everyone will agree, this is a good book in valuation tools. With different version of the DCF models, this book is one of the ideal desk reference of security analysis. However, if you also look at the book "Investment Valuation" by Professor Damodaran, you will agree that this one is only a short version of "Investment Valuation". Almost every topic is covered (or copied) from "Investment Valuation".
I gave "Investment Valuation" a 5-star rating. So, for its short version, I give 4-star.

Thoroughly covers most aspects of equity valuation

I saw the author speak at a conference which prompted me to buy the book. His presentation and book nicely merge theory with practice -- too many valuation books are academic and don't deal with the real-life problems. He seems to anticipate the types of real-life challenges you'll get and then tells you how to handle them (about half the book addresses these "loose ends" that aren't always covered in more basic valuation material). I especially like that he's embraced valuation methods beyond DCF (such as P/E and P/B) because purists tend to dismiss these other methods as too crude for serious consideration(in his book he acknowledges that only 10% of Wall Street valuations are done with DCF). His web site is great for practitioners because you can download the raw numbers for thousands of companies and do the valuation steps he highlights in the book.

Great book on valuation (mainly equity)

The book is mainly aimed at valuation practitioners and MBA sudents. The book deals with 3 valuation techniques- DCF, relative valuation (based on PE, P/BV, PS multiples) and contingent claims (options). Great insights into determining key variables (PE, PS, P/BV) based on business fundamentals and pro and cons of using each approach. However, the book does not go into enough depth in CAPM and APT. The author assumes that the reader would have a fair idea about financial ratios, fundamentals etc. The best part of the book deals with valuation of special cases like cyclical firms, brands etc. and how corporate restructuring affects value. It also provides great insights into valuation for takeovers and mergers. The author provides a usable framework for valuing intangibles in an acquisition target- what the different sources of synergy are and how to value each in a lucid framework. Overall, a good book to gain a firm footing in investment valuation techniques.

SIMON BRIDGE works as a Consultant in the areas of enterprise and economic development for the private, public and voluntary sectors. He has over fifteen years experience in enterprise and has been Enterprise Director in a small business agency. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Institute of Small Business Affairs (ISBA).

KEN O'NEILL is Professor of Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development, and Director of the Management Institute, at the University of Ulster. He is a member of the International Steering Committee of the International Small Business Congress and a former President of both the Institute of Small Business Affairs (ISBA) and the International Council of Small Business (ICSB).

FRANK MARTIN is Senior Teaching Fellow in Entrepreneurship at the University of Stirling.

A Very Good Read

This is another classic book by Kyoasaki. I have read them all and this one is one of my favorites. His books have changed my life and the way I think about money and my quality of life. His best is Rich Dad Poor Dad which sets the foundation for his other reads. This book reflects the evolution of his thinking since his first book in 1997. There is some repition from his other books; but, there should be. The foundation has not changed. His education has evolved. It allowed me to review my path and whether I am attaining assets or income, creating liabilities or income that will stand the test of time etc.

The basic philosophy of this book is that "a coin has three sides. Heads, tails and the edge." If you learn to live on the edge, you will see both sides of a situation. You can then decide what is right for you. He also makes some good arguments as to the inadequacy of our education system and our government. His theories provoke you to think. It is a very interesting read and I cannot wait for his next. If you are new to Robert, my favorites are Rich Dad Poor Dad, the Cash Flow Quadrant, The Midas Touch and Second Chance. They have all changed my business and led to much success both financially and in quality of my life.

You must decide your own fate - not the feds, the unions or even your own family!

This is good AND different from his previous writtings. It seemed more 'real' and I felt he opened his heart up to the reader more than in his previous work.

I've read all of his books liking most books but some not so much. I felt his best work was RDPD and CASHFLOW QUADRANT. In fact, he quotes a lot of CASHFLOW QUADRANT in this book. This is not neccessary a bad thing, especially if you have not read it. A lot of this book is about his relationship with Buckminster Fuller who was a very unique person and who, apparently, affected Kiyosaki a great deal.

BTW - I had always heard that RDPD had started out a 4 page pamphlet so it was nice to hear that from the authors own pen.

Just a little about myself for a moment - my wife and I are both pharmacists. As many of you know this has been a hot area for a couple of decades in terms of salary, etc. We were in the right place at the right time with the right skill set. When we started out in 1982 we had a negative net worth of around -$50,000 including our student loans and our cars. We were able to buy our 1st house 13 months after we got married because were able to save almost $12,000. Due to some luck, much hard work (for example I've worked 26 Thanksgivings since 1982) and living below what we could have we now have a NW (net worth not including my paid off home) of around $2,000,000. My grandfather taught me much of this way of life but Kiyosaki motivated me to use his teachings. I don't always agree with what he says but his books always make me think.

Don't believe everything you read REGARDLESS OF WHO WROTE IT - do you own thinking and fact checking then use that to make choices. ANYONE who really wants it can get to $1,000,000 NW. It won't happen in a week or 6 months but it CAN happen. You must continue to grow and expand your knowledge AND you must use that knowledge. Find youself a mentor and then work your butt off. You will notice a huge difference in 10 or 15 years between where you are and where most other people are. Most people want to be rich without understanding what that means or how to get there. You must write down what your goal is and then achieve it in small steps. That might mean things like I will be worth $25,000 in 2 years. Start small and have a much bigger goal in mind.

I would rate this book a sold 8 to 8.5 out of 10.

Truth Seekers, Buy this Book!

I read all of Robert T. Kiyosaki's Books. The Second Chance book does say a lot of stuff from his other books but is injected with more up to date facts for today's world. Explaining how and why our economic situation is the way it is today. Robert is not politically correct and does not pull any punches so if you would like the cold hard truth, then buy this book. I am looking forward to his next book.
