The approach is data oriented throughout. Students are encouraged to confront data, to spot patterns and to construct their own accounts and they are encouraged to consider their own experience of English and other languages.

Paging Mr. Trask....

Historical Linguistics is an interesting topic to read about. This book does a pretty good job explaining the tool kit an historical linguist needs to reconstruct proto-languages as well as understand language roots. In some cases it seems to be a little off balance, offering more attention to a particular topic and lacking information on another. But all in all it is a helpful text, providing good examples and practice data at the end of each chapter. It is annoying, however, that they didn't pay much attention to the editing. Often a set of data will be referred to in the text but won't show up until the next page or two and the topic of discussion has already changed.

The author provides a lot of interesting case studies with discussion, mostly in the English language since that's his native language. But they are great examples of the work accomplished by historical linguists and demonstrate clearly the principles he is discussing.

An excellent presentation of historical linguistics

As a lay reader, I found the coverage of topics to be impressive and detailed. Sometimes a bit too detailed; but you can always skip over anything that falls into the category of "more than I wanted to know about penguins." But this kind of material gives a sense for the kind of problems that a working linguist faces, and the kinds of solutions obtained.

Some readers have complained that there are no solutions given for the homework problems posed. This is true; but in how many non-mathematical books have you seen ANY homework problems posed? I did not stop to do them, myself, but I imagine that a real effort spent on these exercises would pay off in deeper understanding. If the author is willing, I would imagine that there would be a market for a small addendum which would provide discussion of these exercises.

The discussion of "proto-World" is very interesting, as the author presents both the proposed picture of the descent of all languages and the general skepticism about it.

The book is written with a dry sense of humor, rare in a scholarly book.

This is not a quick read, but will repay the diligent reader.

A Fantastic Introductory Text

I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in historical linguistics, even those with little background knowledge of the subject (although note that it does assume some basic background knowledge in rudimentary linguistic concepts like "phoneme," "syntax," or "nominative"). One of the largest benefits of the book, in my view, is the fact that Trask, who was one of the foremost experts on the Basque language, frequently uses examples from Basque to illustrate points, very useful additional perspective for those with a knowledge only of Indo-European languages. Trask still, however, uses plenty of examples from the Indo-European field, and does not neglect such famous topics as Grimm's Law or the English Vowel Shift. He provides numerous references for further and more in-depth reading for a given chapter's topic at the end of the chapter, and a brief description of each of these references.

He also, as mentioned by a previous reviewer, approaches the debate on alternatives to the comparative method much more even-handedly than some of his colleagues. Although he does dismiss Merritt Ruhlen's Proto-World proposals (offering a good deal of evidence in support), he nonetheless does his best to be more neutral for other controversies, such as the Nostratic hypothesis (the proposal linking the Indo-European, Altaic, Afro-Asiatic, Dravidian, and Caucasian language families [and sometimes others]). He even asks other linguists to approach the Nostratic hypothesis fairly and with an open mind. Although he ultimately takes a stance against most radical proposals of this type, he nonetheless gives them a much more balanced portrait, and gives enough opposing arguments to allow readers to draw their own conclusions, which, considering the controversies in the world of historical linguistics today, is particularly impressive.

Ultimately, the one significant problem, also touched on by other reviewers, is that the excercizes at the end of each chapter have no solutions, and for those who, like me, study linguistics on their own and not in an academic institution, it is often frustrating to not know if they are doing the problems "right" or not.

Gwendolyn is a proper, chaste maiden living in a small, remote village. Hers is a simple life, filled with back-breaking, mind-numbing chores.
That is, until an ogre appears, demanding a virgin offering by the next full moon. It’s her bad luck that she’s just the tender, young morsel the villagers are willing to serve up on a platter.
She tries everything she can to escape her fate, but finds herself out of options and out of time, doomed to be an offering for an ogre.
Then, along comes a stranger. She’s tall, she’s blonde, and she‘s a professional swordswoman. She’s also stunning enough to make many a maiden swoon. Problem is, she’s not at all the hero Gwendolyn imagined. She’s cocky, brazen, and rude. She’s also Gwen’s last, best hope.

Savory and engaging novella!

An imposing ex-military guard with two impressive swords, another daunting knife plus a faded uniform jacket noted by all, saunters into a local tavern in a very small village. She most certainly knows the drill on how to walk, look, and instill caution in all those around her. Before even knowing what she looked like, I was impressed and titillated. This is a charming novella that takes a recurrent fantasy theme and spins a wonderful and unique variation.

Bodhi is traveling from the south to the north in a somewhat leisurely manner. Not in a hurry she is cognizant of the blistering heat impacting daytime travel. The small village she stops at for new shoes for her horse, a room, bath, and a meal with a tankard appears to serve her purpose. This sets the stage for a genteel two-way seductive interaction with the currently most important virgin in the village. The period nuances and mannerisms were just delightful and enveloped the story in an extremely supportive manner. I adored Bodhi!

Gwen is the important pristine lady and curiously talented seductress. She has never been beyond the confines of her village, yet somewhat boldly engages Bodhi with unexpected talent. Gwen was quite fascinating and along with Bodhi provided a very entertaining duo.

I recognized Del Robertson's deft hand in the magnificent exposition of Bodhi as I immensely enjoyed Captain Wolff from `Taming the Wolff' whom I found so phenomenally entertaining. So, in a bit of a shorter work, we are presented the splendid Bodhi who was a joy to watch and follow. She, along with Gwen and a few other outstanding characters frame a perfectly savory and engaging novella that is my pleasure to recommend!

Lovely fairytale

A Novella

Swordswoman, Bodhi, rides into a tiny village. She wants to get out of the heat and to have some food and drink. She didn't imagine she would be approached by a beautiful maiden in the tavern and invited to seduce her. But women do tend to throw themselves at her quite regularly, so she's not altogether surprised. What is surprising is the reactions of the local people, including the gorgeous Gwen. Something is wrong, Bodhi just has to figure out what. Her mighty sword is no use without knowing what is going on in the village.

Beautiful virgin, Gwendolyn, (Gwen) is living a mundane existence, each day is filled with mundane chores. But......when an ugly ogre arrives in the village wanting a fresh and luscious virgin, Gwen is chosen as the offering served by her own villagers. Her days are numbered.

When the tall blonde swordswoman Bodhi arrives, Gwen hopes against hope that she will be the one to save her. Bodhi isn't quite the hero Gwen envisaged saving her. She's arrogant and rude, but she may be Gwen's only chance against being the ogres next victim.

This is a beautifully written fairy tale with a difference. This one is for adults only. I loved both the main characters, Bodhi and Gwen. They are as different as night and day. Although this book is short, the story isn't rushed at all and has a lot packed into it. It's told in a typical fairy tale style. The beautiful maiden, the dashing hero and the nasty ogre. But in this case, the hero and potential rescuer of the maiden is a woman.

The story is a page turner from start to finish. The scenic descriptions enabled me to actually lose myself amongst the characters as the story unfolded. This is a sort of Grimm's meets lesfic tale. Utterly delightful and hopefully the first of more tales in the same vein by Del Robertson. In fact, Bodhi and Gwen have only just started out on their journey, how about a sequel so we can follow them on their path?

About the Author
R. K. Narayan (1906–2001) was one of the most prominent Indian novelists of the twentieth century. Most of his stories are set in the fictional South Indian town of Malgudi, a place that Narayan populated with numerous characters. He was the recipient of many awards for his work including the National Prize of the Indian Literary Academy, India's highest literary honor. In 1980 he was awarded the AC Benson Medal by the Royal Society of Literature, of which he was an honorary member and in 1982 he was elected an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

A Tale Of Love & The Common Man Touched By A Great Soul

R. K. Narayan's "Waiting For Mahatma" is set in southern India, in the fictional village of Malgudi, during the final years of the country's struggle for Independence from the British Empire. This is the second book I have read by Narayan, and I enjoyed both immensely. The author is a classic teller of tales, totally irreverent in his use of humor and irony. His straightforward prose is graceful and highly readable.

Sriram is an orphan who has lived with his Granny since childhood. His father was killed fighting for the British in Mesopotamia, and the grandmother has received a monthly military pension for the boy ever since. She saved every penny in an account set up for Sriram, and now that he is twenty years-old, she signs the account over to him. Feeling wealthy and quite independent, he strolls around town until he is stopped by a beautiful girl, asking for a contribution. She is collecting money for Mahatma Gandhi's work. And Mahatmaji is coming to visit the people of Malgudi.

Sriram is not particularly knowledgeable about Gandhi, nor has he thought much about Indian independence, the elimination of the caste system, and nonviolent civil disobedience. He is totally focused on the girl collecting coins for a cause. He wants to know her name, her age, her caste, her horoscope and whether she is free to marry him. He is love struck from the first glance. Later, Sriram wades into a great gathering of people, all awaiting the arrival of "the great soul," to look for the lovely young woman in the crowd. The throng suddenly cries out in one great voice, "Mahatma Gandhi Ki Jai!" He has arrived. The great man begins to clap his hands rhythmically and loudly and asks the crowd to do the same, with vigor and spirit. "No good. Not enough. I like to see more vigor in your arms, more rhythm, more spirit. It must be like the drum beats of the non-violent soldiers marching to cut the chains that bind Mother India."

Sriram eventually finds Bharati, the girl of his dreams, in Gandi's entourage. He asks to volunteer, to work for the cause, and charms Bharati by his obvious romantic intentions. She, however, has more serious matters on her mind. She brings Sriram to meet Gandhi, after he promises to tell the truth in all things. He suddenly blurts out that he wants to work and live in the ashram so he can be close to Bharati. Gandhi responds that Bharati must be pleased to have such a fine friend. He will permit Sriram to travel with him and his followers for a few weeks if Granny permits. When the Mahatma finally leaves the area, Sriram becomes Bharati's disciple, and she his Guru, with the great man's blessing. His parting words to the boy are, "Spin and read Bhagavad Gita, and utter Ram Nam continuously, and then you will know what to do in life." He promises to write to both of them, and he does.

As the struggle becomes more intense, Gandhi is jailed and many of his followers choose to protest by going to prison also. Such a one is Bharati. Sriram is left on his own to do the best he can and remain faithful to the ideals he has dedicated himself to. Although his version of nonviolent resistance is quite different from Gandhi's and Bharati's.

Although I found fascinating, and terribly moving, all the narrative that has to do with Mahatma Gandhi, this is, in fact, a story of the common man. Most of the novel's characters are touched only slightly by the political events taking place in their nation. Their primary concerns are much more basic - food, shelter, clothing, health, etc.. The problems of the larger world may intrude occasionally, but not for long. The author perfectly portrays the small village and its peoples concerns, trials and tribulations, and juxtaposes them against Mahatma Gandhi's take on the big picture and love for his people. This is a wonderful novel which I highly recommend.

An excellent tale of a man's life intertwined with his land.

A truly Indian experience. As told by R.K. Narayan this story evolves from a dreamy pace to a fevered pitch. Sriram is a child growing up in his own world. A world of security, comfort and laziness. What is it that drives this youth to seek change? The entrance of a romance in his life, the natural process of growing up or is it the Mahatma? Narayan uses his narrative style and rustic observation to enrich this tale and capture the spirit of rural India coming to terms with its liberation. What does this liberty mean? Our hero's life has changed for good. Driven by the spirit of the events unfolding around him Sriram is involved in the fight for freedom. But Sriram's motives are suspect. And has his life really changed? Yet Sriram is still capable of selfless action. His love for Bharathi and his devotion to her vindicate his motives. With his characteristic charm Narayan has recreated the common life amidst a historic perspective. For lovers of Narayan this is a must read. Enjoy.

Love transcends everything

Sriram, a 20-year old lad with lots of money, a loving grandmother and all the time in the world (to waste) meets Bharati, a beautiful woman. And as it always happens, falls in love instantly. But Bharati is involved in the Indian freedom struggle, and is a disciple of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the independence movement. She is a serious-minded woman and will think of nothing other than the task on hand. Sriram realises that the only way to win her hand is by immersing himself in the freedom movement.
Thus he embarks on a life of struggles - he deserts his grandmother and all the money. At times, Sriram thinks if he should ever have altered the course of his life. Did he not enjoy life before? But love transcends everything. And for that one woman in his life, he will undergo any tribulation. He is waiting for her, but will she? The ending of the story is quite excellent, and will have you spellbound.
Set in the 1940s, this book wonderfully narrates the freedom struggle through the eyes of Sriram and Bharati. To me, it is the most important work of R.K. Narayan and ranks alongside his classic debut novel, Swami and Friends.

About the Author
Jerome E. Kaufmann received his Ed.D. in Mathematics Education from the University of Virginia. Now a retired Professor of Mathematics from Western Illinois University, he has more than 30 years of teaching experience at the high school, two-year, and four-year college levels. He is the author of 45 college mathematics textbooks.

Karen L. Schwitters graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a B.S. in Mathematics. She earned an M.S. Ed. in Professional Secondary Education from Northern Illinois University. Schwitters is currently teaching at Seminole Community College in Sanford, Florida, where she is very active in multimedia instruction and is involved in planning distance learning courses with multimedia materials. She is an advocate for Enhanced WebAssign and uses it in her classroom. In 1998, she received the Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Technology Award.

Heads up to college students

I recently purchased my algebra book online through Amazon and was quite surprised to recieve it and find that it is an instructors edition. It was originally a $245 book that I bought for $165. The description said it had tape on the cover otherwise like new. This was true, the book has never been written in or damaged in any way.
My teacher immediately knew it was an instructors edition because of the tape covering up large letters that say NOT FOR RESALE. I now am in class and do not have time to order books online and must go purchase another book for $245. It is illegal to have an instructors edition and any administrator on campus may take it from me not to mention the ethical dilema or the fact that I am paying good $ for college and would like to actually learn the subject.
Beware textbook buyers of "tape on the cover".

In addition to still-life, portraiture, and travel and lifestyle photography, their work together encompasses a wide variety of creative disciplines, including set design, furniture design, crafting, creative direction, and graphic design. Great resource for crafters!

This is a really amazing book and a wonderful resource for crafters of any experience level with paper flowers. The authors provide endless inspiration for both creating flowers and ways to use your creations. The book is split up into several sections, including pictures of completed flowers for pure inspiration, a detailed how-to section with lots of instructions and tips on general techniques and materials, step-by-step instructions on how to make flowers featured in the earlier chapter, and then the largest collection of templates I've ever seen. Not only do the authors tell you how to make the flowers in the book, they also encourage you to mix and match templates and create your own to form entirely new flowers. While the flowers in this book are not the typical life-like recreations of real flowers found in other books, many of the designs can be altered to create realistic and beautiful flowers that can be mixed in with traditional crepe or tissue roses, daisies, and the like in any bouquet, arrangement, or favor. There are also a number of fun, whimsical designs that seem very fitting for more casual purposes.

I am working on creating paper flowers for my wedding next summer, and am excited to include a number of flowers and ideas from this book. The images included are just gorgeous and the instructions are very detailed, even rated for difficulty so that users can know what to expect when starting a project. Honestly, the resources listing in the back of the book alone is invaluable for someone who has been trying to track down all the various online stores for different kinds of crepe paper, tissue, flower stamens, floral tape, decorative scissors, etc. I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in crepe-paper flower making. Especially if used in conjunction with a book like "How to Make 100 Paper Flowers" by Maria Noble, you'll learn everything you need and never run out of ideas and projects!

THE Guide for Paper Enthusiasts....

I love paper arts and either dabble or dive into them depending on my schedule, need to indulge, budget, etc, and I've been committing a greater-than-average amount of time into paper arts booka for the last year. I've got a bookcase of some really cute books, some informative, and some works or art that I will never master. This book has it all, and then some. Photos, text, templates, bound in a really thick book. Not the usual craft book.

There is a section devoted to the "examples" they have made for clients, all 75 flowers are magical. The next section describes the materials used to make paper flowers. The fact that they don't force any brand is a plus, if you aren't new to paper arts, you already have most of the materials, except, perhaps, for the stems and centers. The skills section is vital unless you are an expert in creating paper flowers. It is really useful that they have picture and text intermixed and that they break down flowers to their smallest parts. (center, stamen, stem, petal, etc) Each technique is introduced "contextually". So many helpful images of action and steps. Different means of shaping for different paper and a focus on creating rounded, organic forms. Because that is what nature is, correct? Organic, rounded flowers, no matter what colors you use are going to look amazingly real, just like all of the examples in the book, over something straight, flat, and fake. There is none of that in this guide. Not in the images or the writing, or even their style, it is really natural, beautiful and likeable.

The how-to section gives you just that for each one of those 75 flowers, broken down to their visual individual parts, and marks the skill level of each one. They are using a scale, of 1,2 or 3,; 1(basic techniques) to 3 (advanced techniques). The authors are so kind as to give us some advice as how someone with a solid 2 level skill could modify a 3 flower project to their strengths, which I find especially helpful, and give you a rubric for mastery at each level. This is something more "high-level" crafters need to include in their guides; not just beginner techniques, not just advanced techniques or looks, but what does the spectrum look like, what does it include? How can I take a project that is too advanced and target it towards my level (What to remove in the flower? What to add to make the project look good, help me improve skills, but not look like my 3rd grader did it?)

After the how-tos, as the other reviewers have stated, there are pages of templates to the shapes used for the flower - well over 200. They include a good source guide. One warning to the paper newbie, some of this paper and related materials can be extremely expensive. You can go through and find the materials that work for you and your project(s) at any price point with the variety of resources the authors include.

This will be THE paper (handmade) flower book for the year, if not years. What an excellent job this couple has done on their first book (she was an style director at Martha Stewart Weddings and they run a design business), I look forward to seeing more from them!

This is a gorgeous book, I actually was shocked.

My book arrived this morning. I'm not sure what I was expecting, maybe a few projects and templates. OMG I was so shocked when I opened the box -- a really beautiful hardcover book. I think this book is worth way more than the retail price, but I'm grateful that I was able to get it.

Page after page of beautiful, color-rich flowers, either fantasy or actual blooms. Templates, instructions, supplier list all included. They bring up things I hadn't even thought of, such as using watercolor and acrylic paints to create realistic looking effects.

This book, which is a work of art in and of itself, is going to get plenty of use. I feel as if it's Christmas and I finally got what I actually wanted.

This is a must-have!
