Mississippi Bridge, by Mildred D. Taylor

Another powerful story in the Logan Family Saga and companion to Mildred D. Taylor's Newbery Award-winning Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry.

A day of conflict and tragedy.

Cassie Logan and her brothers watch as the weekly bus from Jackson comes splashing through a heavy rainstorm—they are there to see their grandmother off on a trip. One by one, the passengers board the bus. But this is Mississippi in the 1930s, so when several white passengers arrive at the last minute, the driver roughly orders the black passengers off the bus, including Cassie’s grandmother. Then, disaster strikes in the rain, and the children witness a shocking end to the day’s drama.

The Newbery Medalist reprises the Logan family in telling a powerful story about the segregated South of the 1930s. Ages 7-11.
Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-10-- Drawing once again upon her father's stories, Taylor has created a harsh, disturbing tale of racism in Mississippi during the 1930s. Told from the viewpoint of Jeremy Simms, a ten-year-old white boy who aspires to be friends with the black children of the Logan family, this is the story of a rainy day, an overloaded bus, and the destiny of its passengers after the driver has ordered the black travelers off to make room for latecoming whites. Telescoping the injustices faced by blacks on a daily basis into one afternoon drives home the omnipresent effects of racism with a relentless force. This is an angry book, replete with examples of the insults and injuries to which the African-American characters are subjected. Jeremy, the only white character to acknowledge this unfairness, is brought to task by his father for "snivelin' " after the Logans. The book's climax is a catastrophic accident in which the bus crashes off a bridge, killing the passengers. When Jeremy asks a black rescuer how such a thing could happen, he is told, "the Lord works in mysterious ways." This is a disturbing explanation, not for its implication that the white passengers are being punished for the sins of their race so much as for the logical extension that the black characters were saved because they were kept off the bus in the first place. Well written and thought provoking, this book will haunt readers and generate much discussion. --Anna DeWind, Milwaukee Public Library

Mississippi Bridge is one of Mildred Taylor's finest books.
By A Customer
Mississippi Bridge is a prequel to Taylor's other novelsabout the Logan family. This time, however, the reader is treatedto the viewpoint of Jeremy Simms, the shy and sensitive white boy who sees in the Logan family everything that is missing in his own. Taylor captures not only the bite of prejudice in depression era Mississippi, but shows its effect on the lives of those who reject prejudice. Taylor cleverly weaves a story in which a tragic accident clearly dispenses a bittersweet justice in that world of prejudice without taking away the reader's sympathy for the victims.

A+ 100% Book!!!!
By A Customer
This is a story about how black people were treated differently than white people. The white people didn't treat the black people nicely. Black people had jobs being slaves for the white people. In the 1930's if black people wanted to ride the bus they had to sit in the back. If there were a lot of white people wanting to ride the bus the black people would get kicked off the bus.
I think that it is interesting that the white adults didn't feel like being around the black people, but their children didn't notice the color of their skin.
I fyou like stories about history you will like reading this book.
Josias was one of the main characters and he lived the story. The bus that the white people kicked off the black people was going down the bridge and went off into the river. Josias went down and started to try to save the people in the bus. A little girlthat Josias brought up was dead. No one survived on the bus even though they did everything that they could.
If I was a teacher on the book I would give it an A+ 100%.

Taylor has wowed me again!
By Michelle
I am simply facinated by the Logan series that Mildred D. Taylor has created. Born and raised in Mississippi, I have seen first hand the actions that Taylor writes about. I share the books with my students. I plan to read this one next week. I can't wait. Mississippi Bridge gives us a look into the character Jeremy Simms. The story is one of pride and human nature. This story, along with Taylor's others, is an excellent teaching tool. Children of all ages can learn from our past mistakes through these touching and true to life stories. I highly recommend ANY and ALL of the Logan series books!

Great Herbal Encyclopedia
By Moriakurei
I have had these encyclopedias for 8 years now and I still turn to them often. They are an excellent collection. They cover dosages and forms of administration. They also cover all common and many uncommon herbs. Each chapter includes past use of the herb, color drawing of the herb and sometimes a photo as well, current use with scientific information, areas where the herb can be found, dosages and warnings, the best form of application (tea, lotion, gargle, ticture etc), and it's name in several languages. I love these encylopedias. They are very useful and effective. I'm not sick often, but when I am I reach for these. I like to do cosmetic research (for my own amusement) and these are also good for that. I haven't found a better product yet. They are also made of durable material and are hard cover. I also plan to buy his food encyclopedia soon. They are arranged along the same format. You have to get this!!! The herbs are arranged by the body part that they benefit the most (skin, oral health, muscle etc). You can search for herbs by disease, latin name, and common name in several languages. Their index is very comprehensive. They are indispensable to me.

Exercises in Architecture: Learning to Think as an Architect, by Simon Unwin

Architecture is a doing word. You can learn a great deal about the workings of architecture through analysing examples but a fuller understanding of its powers and potential comes through practice, by trying to do it...

This book offers student architects a series of exercises that will develop their capacity for doing architecture. Exercises in Architecture builds on and supplements the methodology for architectural analysis presented in the author’s previous book Analysing Architecture (third edition, Routledge, 2009) and demonstrated in his Twenty Buildings Every Architect Should Understand (Routledge, 2010). The three books taken together deal with the three aspects of learning: description, analysis of examples, and practice.

The book offers twelve exercises, each divided into a short series of tasks aimed at developing a particular theme or area of architectural capacity. The exercises deal with themes such as place-making, learning through drawing, framing, light, , uses of geometry, stage setting, eliciting emotional responses, the genetics of detail and so forth.

Review

'Having assured many students that there are no quick fix injections or architectural jabs available, I have previously extolled the benefits to be derived from a prolonged course of general architectural physiotherapy. From now on I will be more than happy to specifically prescribe Exercises in Architecture.'

Simon Hacker, Lecturer in Architecture at Newcastle University, UK

'By way of a series of written observations, Simon Unwin demonstrates some of the most basic lessons of architecture. With his elegantly drawn examples paired with simple notebook exercises for the reader, Unwin creates a text that interweaves reading, looking, thinking, and making into a series of self-discoveries. This book will challenge both beginning designers and accomplished professionals alike.'

Peter Wong, Associate Professor of Architecture at the University of North Carolina Charlotte, USA

"Simon Unwin has written the perfect book for all those who have often wondered how architects design. Clear, informative exercises take you through everyday basic design problems architects face when conceiving and developing a building. Exercises in Architecture is a must-have textbook for any university that offers an Understanding Architecture course, for high schools that have design-focused programs, and for any person generally interested in understanding the architectural design process."

Charles P. Graves, Associate Professor of Architecture and Urban Design at Kent State University, USA

'Exercises in Architecture is an extraordinarily accessible text that takes on a great many sophisticated topics fundamental to architectural understanding. The clarity of Unwin’s writing and his superbly crafted drawings will be refreshing and inspiring to both students and faculty. I especially appreciate the attention placed on the process of developing one’s ability to "do" architecture, and the real necessity of using a sketchbook in this process.'

Matthew T. Brehm, Associate Professor of Architecture at the University of Idaho, USA

Great book by a great author. Do keep in mind, however, that in order to maintain elegant page layouts, the text was set with unnecessarily small - no, tiny - type, making it a bit of a chore to read. Pity.

From Publishers Weekly
Biondi and Hecox (authors of All His Father's Sins: The Shocking Truth About California's Most Gruesome Serial Killer ) offer a fast-paced if facile report of a deranged killer who claimed six victims and drank their blood. The authors first show Richard Chase in a bizarre moment--naked and covered with cow blood--and that glimpse chills as the story proceeds: Chase harassed neighbors, left a perverse token in a house he burgled and seemed paranoid in public. When he graduated to murder, he not only shot his victims but sexually mutilated them. Former Sacramento homicide detective Biondi supplies inside information on the investigation, such as a television crew's discovery of evidence overlooked by police. In addition, he and Hecox produce crime bulletins issued by police and the surprisingly accurate psychological profile detectives prepared of the killer. Luck combined with old-fashioned detective work flushed out Chase, who initially would admit only to killing dogs. But Chase told a fellow prisoner that he drank victims' blood, and after he took the stand in his own defense, jurors decided not to find him insane. He committed suicide on death row in 1980.

Read the highlights on Wikipedia. Save your money.
By PussyCatJustice
This book was pretty awful. I think people who buy books to read about serial killers want to read about the serial killer. This book, about 90% of it is about the lead investigator. You learn very little about Chase, his childhood, his motives or what makes him tick. I kept reading in hopes that it would get better, it never did.

True Crime:Don't Read If You Live Alone
By Carol Chase Mcelheney
Even though this killer is long dead, it just goes to show how easily he got into victims' homes and killed in broad daylight without neighbors hearing a thing. I knew the author and most of the officers involved in the case and I was just beginning my law enforcement career in Sacramento when this case went down. I had heard some of the details, and lived alone in a bad neighborhood with a few guns and a friendly dog. I was too naive to be scared. Hopefully Richard Chase was one of a very few of his kind.

**A TEEN INK HOT NEW RELEASE BOOK**

It was supposed to be Lexy Quinn's year. Shy, pragmatic seventeen-year-old Lexy has finally landed the coveted spot as Senior Editor of her school's newspaper when the rug is ripped out from under her. Her mother is diagnosed with a rare illness and the family must move half-way across the country to privileged Preston Hills, Texas. Lexy can't think of a worse place to be than at a school full of snobby rich kids where she'll have to start all over to get people to notice her writing, or-who is she kidding--notice her at all. When jock celebrity quarterback and all-around golden boy Ash Preston gives her an exclusive interview, Lexy's life takes an unexpected turn. Ash is the perfect guy and even better, he sees Lexy as she wants to be seen. There's just one problem: Ash is Christian and Lexy doesn't believe in God.

Opposites attract but the differences between Lexy and Ash seem too big to overcome until tragedy strikes. Lexy is forced to question everything she once knew as true and along the way, learns life-changing lessons about friendship, forgiveness, and following your heart.

Coming of Age - and bringing God along
By Grady Harp
`It began with meatloaf.' Any author who has the courage to let that free standing sentence initiate his story has courage. But Rektok Ross (it is not clear whether the author is a male or female - and that adds to the interest of the book) has considerable talent in constructing the mindset and stage directions for a teen romance and coming of age story and Ross is able to make this little story work.

The concept is not new - except Ross makes it seem new with a thoroughly grounded atmosphere of life as young teens view it. Alexandra "Lexy" Quinn is 17 and has finally achieved the coveted Editor's position on her high school newspaper in Atlanta: life is going well. That is until her life is `broken' with the news that her mother has a rare form of blood cancer, the available treatment zone being, of all places, Texas. Lexy's family uproots and moves to Texas where she encounters endless challenges - she is a senior, used to having the title of editor but is now faced with unaccepting rich girls instead of friends, accepting an assignment to interview the wealthy and attractive Ash. Good assignment? Well, maybe, but there is a contrast that must be overcome: Ash is a Christian and Lexy has been raised as an atheist/agnostic. How the two personalities resolve these differences constitutes the core of the novel.

Rektok Ros has stated in a blog, `My novel, PRODIGAL, is a young adult romance that deals with faith being found in unexpected places. Seventeen-year-old Lexy Quinn comes from a family that doesn't believe in a Christian God. I wrote her mother as an archetype for those who have never had any religious beliefs. Mrs. Quinn "has the religious compass of an ADD hippie" and has dabbled in Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism, and even New Age spiritualism without ever choosing one. But for Mr. Quinn, I thought it would be interesting to have a representative from the other end of the nonreligious spectrum--someone who had once had faith and then lost it. Somewhere in between rewriting PRODIGAL Steve Jobs passed away, and I stumbled across an article about his death. I'd heard long ago that Mr. Jobs had been an atheist but for some reason I'd assumed he'd always been that way: Even though they were not fervent about their faith, Jobs' parents wanted him to have a religious upbringing, so they took him to the Lutheran church most Sundays. That came to an end when he was thirteen. In July 1968 "Life" magazine published a shocking cover showing a pair of starving children in Biafra. Jobs took it to Sunday school and confronted the church's pastor. "If I raise my finger, will God know which one I'm going to raise even before I do it? The pastor answered, "Yes, God knows everything." Jobs then pulled out the "Life" cover and asked, "Well, does God know about this and what's going to happen to those children?" "Steve, I know you don't understand, but yes, God knows about that." Jobs announced that he didn't want to have anything to do with worshipping such a God, and he never went back to church. It made me wonder. At thirteen, Mr. Jobs decided that he didn't want anything to do with a God he couldn't understand, but what if at an older age, Mr. Jobs had come back and asked the question again. Would he have changed his mind? This premise was the setup for the life story of Mr. Quinn.'

As usual a few words form the author provide far more insight than a simple distillation of a books outline. Some readers would have problems with the superimposed God entry into a romance, but it seems that is where Rektok Ross wanted us to go. And it works. Grady Harp, May 13

Pleasant Surprise
By Isabel Gomez
I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book! I was engrossed from beginning to end. I think the biggest reason why I enjoyed this book is the pacing. I love it when a book is able to cover a long span of time without hurting the quality of storytelling. I think Ross did a wonderful job at setting the pace for the book. The beginning alone was told in a pace that was just right, so I was able to get into the story faster. Some parts were told in detail while some were merely part of the narration, but still contributed to the overall flow of the story.

I also liked how real the characters felt - and that's also one of the reasons why I wasn't so bugged out by the religious aspect of the book. I can just imagine how the characters would say their lines if they were real people. Even Blythe's insults and snarky comments weren't over the top unlike in some stories. Everybody was believable.

Now let's talk about the protagonist: Lexy. She's smart but she's pretty clueless about boys. I mean, come on! Ash Preston is basically making time for you, and you know it's not just about the interview anymore, do you even wonder if he likes you? But that was case for the first half of the book. The rest of it - when she did realize that Ash had a thing for her - got more complicated and I don't want to spoil for you. Heh. Lexy's character may be a wallflower on the outside but inside, she's really something. She's a nerd who really goes after what she wants for her future and I really like that about her. It's very rare to read about female protagonists in a school setting who are more bent on getting her choice career track than getting the school's star player. I like that despite becoming a somebody in school, she didn't lose sight of who she really is - she remained a nerd I love that.

What I didn't like about her though is the way she handled her mother's illness. It kind of bothered me that she didn't react the way a normal person would if they'd find out one of their family members have cancer. She still went out a lot and it seemed like her love life troubled her more than her mom being sick. Eh?

I know some of you might get turned off by the religious aspect but trust me, it's not enough for this book to be characterized as religious fiction. Ross just made a few references to God and a parable (Prodigal Son) but it wasn't as if it was the central theme of the book. I think it's cool how Lexy was able to get a bit of clarity with the help of going to Church and reading about God and whatnot but it didn't instantly make her life better like magic. It just made her see things differently, and I think it's one of the most truthful things about religion in general.

And this is what I was saying earlier - the characters seemed real, so when they said stuff like, "Maybe God has a plan for you." it didn't feel preachy to me. I don't think it's because I'm religious and I'm surrounded by religious people so hearing lines like that is pretty normal to me. If it feels preachy, it feels preachy - in books and in real life. Prodigal wasn't like that. To me, Ross was able to incorporate religious references into the YA storyline smoothly.

The only thing I didn't like was the time it took for the Lexy-Ash issue to get resolved. At some point I felt so upset because of the conflict that I felt my heart beat uncontrollably like I'm the one experiencing it (dramatic much). For a reader to be affected like that, that's got to be great writing, right? Trouble was, the resolution happened in the last 3 percent of the book. I kept checking the location map on my Kindle app because I was starting to panic. I almost felt like they weren't getting a happily ever after but once they did, I felt really relieved and satisfied with how it turned out.

Overall, I'd say Prodigal is definitely a must read. It's refreshing, written beautifully with a great set of characters and a storyline that will get you hooked from the very first chapter till the end. Hey, any book that gets me reading for hours straight is surely great one!

A beautifully woven faith-based novel
By Sandy @ Craving YA Reads
'Prodigal' was a carefully woven faith-based story about a girl learning to cope with the loss of a loved one in her life.

Now I don't usually read faith-based novels, but every now and then I'll read a summary and think I'll enjoy it...and as long as it's not riddled with bible stories and such (where it feels like the author's trying to teach me something) then I give it a go. Anyway, I was given an arc of this some time ago and I decided to read it while I had the chance.

And I have to say I was glad I did.

There was something almost natural about the way some of the bible stories were written into the book. Sometimes when tragedy hits your life, you ask the question of why? People deal with it different ways, but it seemed so natural that Lexy started asking questions about faith and God. Yeah, I have a squeamish feeling in my stomach even writing about God, but there you have it, because I was very impressed with this book. The story line, even though I've read a similar plot before, was done so well it didn't matter. I could relate to the story line - mainly because I lost my father about a month ago. I felt Lexy's pain -with not only the loss of her loved one, but also with the other dramas she had in her life.

Prodigal was such a fun novel, but also a sad one at times. It made me cry anyway. That's another thing I liked about this book - the range of emotions it made me feel. It made me laugh, cry and want to throw things. The writing made it that way - just like the characters did.

Lexy was a girl who had left everything behind and had to start fresh because of it. She handled almost seamlessly. Was she perfectly behaved? Nah, but she wasn't a snarky cow either. I think she was very pragmatic. She was likable and relatable in the way she dealt with things. She didn't become instantly popular, but neither was she immediately disliked. And that's what I liked. She was real.

Every now and then I'll come across a boy main character who deserves to be crush-worthy and I think Ash was. Sure, he was the hottest, sexiest, blah, blah , blah around, but he was also a spineless coward some of the time. His reasons for this were sound, even if his beliefs were not ... and I'm not talking about religion here. He was so well loved that his sister had his back and I liked that. It was so nice to see a normal brother/sister relationship. Sure, brothers and sisters fight when they're children, but most of the time they get along. I know I did with my brother.

And the secondary characters were done really well, especially Blythe. I really loved her transition during the story. She was developed in such a way that my thoughts of her had completely turned around by the time I had finished 'Prodigal'. My compliments to Rektok for having the skill to change my mindset about a character.

The only thing I didn't like about 'Prodigal' was that I felt some of scenes could have been fleshed out more. Some of the more serious parts felt like they had just been skimmed over and it would have been a lot more moving if they had been better developed.

All in all, though, this was an absolutely fantastic faith-based read.

I would recommend this to anyone who likes general fiction, although it wouldn't suit someone who absolutely loathed religion in their books. It might just drive you nuts.

From Booklist
Gr. 3-5. Through the 1848 journal of nine-year-old Joshua McCullough, readers come face-to-face with the rigors of the wagon-train trek from St. Joseph, Missouri, to the Oregon Territory. Joshua shares the daily routines of wagon train travel, making real the everyday annoyances as well as the life-threatening dangers that are part of the trip. Washing away trail dust that cakes animals' eyes shut, pitching in to replace another family's possessions that spilled into a river, burying those who die along the way from illness or wagon accidents are among the events recounted in Joshua's simply penned, yet compelling entries. This perceptive boy senses a mother's pain over the loss of her children on the trail and, despite others' mistrust and fear, observes, "Indians are a lot like the rest of us." This entry in the My America series will stick in readers' minds and enrich their studies of the era. Ellen Mandel

A book about a boy, but is it a boy's book?
By X. Libris
We just added "Westward to Home" and several other "My America" books to our elementary school library, so it remains to be seen how popular this particular title will be.
Author Patricia Hermes does a fine job of telling the story of a nine-year old boy, through brief journal entries, about life on the Oregon Trail in 1848. While we get a kid's eye view of the hardships, the people, and some of the typical events associated with traveling west by covered wagon, I'm not convinced that this is a genuinely BOY'S book.
I have traveled along the Oregon Trail, from Independence, MO, to Walla Walla, WA, and I was once a boy. That makes me no expert, but I think a nine-year old kid on the Oregon Trail would be less interested in the interpersonal difficulties of the adults in the wagon train, and more fascinated with guns, never-before-seen animals such as pronghorns, prairie dogs, snakes, lizards, and buffalo, and some of the amazing landforms that come into view after a monotonous trek across the flat prairies.
There was a brief mention of Chimney Rock, which would be awe inspiring for any kid to see and muse about. And what about Register Rock where a kid would surely stop to scratch in his own name and read the signatures of those who had gone on before? One would think a boy would be more amazed at his first views of the Rockies. And even when Joshua is curious about the Indians he sees in the forts along the way, I'd expect him to be more fascinated with the way they looked and talked, what they wore, how they smelled and how they did things like eat and smoke. This could also be said for the soldiers and trappers he must've seen at these forts.
I also can't imagine a nine-year old boy spending so much time in his journal worrying about a girl who was "sweet" on him. Instead, I would like to have seen his male friendships developed a bit more fully.
Having said all this, I still think this book is a welcome addition to middle grade titles about the Oregon Trail. The overall picture of the life, people and hardships, including many tragic deaths, is realistic. I anticipate that more girls will be reading this than boys, but it fills a need at this level.

From Library Journal
Released in 1971 as Black Nationalism and the Revolution in Music, this book is essentially a compilation of articles published in Jazz Review. LJ's reviewer took exception to Kofsky's racist notions but nonetheless asserted that he wrote well (LJ 6/1/71). This would make a good companion to Kofsky's recent Black Music, White Business: Illuminating the History and Political Economy of Jazz, also from Pathfinder.

The African-Americaness of jazz
By Tony Thomas
The late Frank Kofsky was a radical historian, and a lover of Jazz. This book is based on articles he published in Jazz magazines in the middle 1960s, interviews he did with Coltrane.

Despite its weaknesses, this book is important in that it stresses the importance of the African American nature of Coltrane and modern jazz, and its links to Black militancy in the 1960s. It places Jazz not just in the historical links to aFrican American musical survivors but the Jazz of the 50s and 60s in the context of the ferment in the Black community arising from the civil rights and Black power movements.

As such, it is a good answer to the current Wynton Marsalis-Stanley Crouch-Albert Murray mafia's insistence that Jazz is not African American, but a product of 'greatness" of American capitalism and that Jazz needs to acquire the forms, conventions, and practices of European classical music.

. . And this is vital to Coltrane's importance in the advancement of Jazz completely against these conventions.
This book has weaknesses. Kofsy's analysis is distant from Marxist cultural theory, especially as he tries to identify artistic validity with political content. Kofsky seems unaware of the question of class within the African American people or among jazz musicians. Kofsky never really lets the reader know how religion and spirituality became central to John Coltrane and his music in his later years.

Still, this book is part of the defense of the place of John Coltrane in the history of Jazz, and of Jazz's own place in history.

Well-intentioned but misdirected
By Tyler Smith
Kofsky's effort in this book is to tie the avant-garde jazz music that emerged in the sixties to the politics of black nationalism that were boiling up at the same time. His essential thesis is that jazz is an African American art form that is and always has been by its very nature a form of protest against the physical and ideological shackles placed on black people by an oppressive society. He asserts that the musical freedom that black jazz artists searched for in the '60s went hand-in-hand with the efforts of Malcolm X and others to create a new, Afrocentric society that would presumably free black people to nurture their cultural identity.
As the title suggests, Kofsky saw John Coltrane as the key figure in this movement. He is unstinting in his praise of Coltrane's music, so much so that even I, a hard-core fan of Trane's for more than 30 years, found myself yearning for a more leavened approach. Kofsky certainly knows Coltrane's music well. But he makes, in my opinion, a fatal error in investing that music with a political consciousness and aim that Coltrane himself never professed. In fact, in an interview included in the book that Kofsky conducted with the saxophonist, he (Coltrane) makes clear that he does not subscribe to Kofsky's thesis, despite the writer's repeated attempts to put words in his mouth. Some years ago, I secured a tape of this interview, and it's startling to hear how insistent Kofsky becomes in attempting to lead his subject where he clearly doesn't want to go.
Another key weakness of the book is that it gives short shrift to so many fine musicians of the period. Charles Mingus, for example, a key influence on the avant-garde, is barely mentioned. If you read the book and had never heard of Miles Davis, you'd come away thinking that he was just another planet circling the Coltrane star instead of one of the formative influences on the saxophonist himself. And of course solid and influential musicians who made incremental contributions to the music -- Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson, Lee Morgan, Jaki Byard, Herbie Hancock (the list could go on and on) -- receive nary a word. Meanwhile, Archie Shepp is lionized, first and foremost because of his radical politics.
Lest anyone think I'm taking a shot at Archie, I hasten to add that I think he's made a number of fine albums, and I own quite a few of them. The point is that one realizes early on that Kofsky is less interested in understanding the creative process and analyzing the relative musical merits of jazz musicians than he is in developing a social critique and applying his political litmus tests to the musicians of the era. Viewed in this light, the book is not very informative. A long critique of the "cockroach capitalism" practiced by jazz club owners 40 years ago doesn't carry much weight today. And alas, the socialist revolution that Kofsky proclaimed was imminent has somehow failed to come to pass, yet jazz has endured. Is there a lesson there?
In the end, Kofsky manages to minimize the artistry of the musicians and make them appear to be guided inexorably by Marxist ideology. That's pretty flimsy and it certainly in my mind is a disservice to the many great musicians of the '60s who could never be pinned down to one influence. In fact, their stubborn resistance to being pinned down, and to be endlessly open to new ideas, is precisely what made them jazz musicians.
For a much better insight into the life of the jazz musician, I would suggest A.B. Spellman's "Four Lives in the Bebop Business," and for a balanced analysis of Coltrane's music, Eric Nisenson's "Ascension."

This book got me listening to jazz and enjoying it
By Katy LeRougetel
Not a biography of Coltrane, this is a really interesting discourse on jazz as it evolved through the racism, civil rights movement and African liberation struggles of the times. Kofsky (the author) was a protagonist in the jazz world and although his obsession with petty quarrels among critics can get a bit wearing, the book is so grounded in the real, lived-through conflicts sodden in the overt racism of the music establishment, it is a good read. Imagine, many critics wouldn't even admit jazz was Black music - couldn't concede such a contribution from "the Negros"!
Several chapters replete with musical scores were too much for me to understand, since I don't play an instrument, but they clearly round out Kofsky's points on the structure of jazz. Learned all kinds of stuff about how the measured, symmetrical symphony compositions of Europe reflect that society's inner workings, versus the different beat of African music picked up by jazz. Instead of exploring a different take on rythm and sound, early critics hrrumphed and complained of cacophony. The chauvinism is so damn self-assured.
Also has beautiful photos, many taken by the author himself. Proof he was really there through thick and thin.
