New Edition Necessary

I am sorry to say that I am disappointed in this book. While other editions may have been better, this one is riddled with typos, grammatical errors, and disorganized chapters while fail to focus on the nutrition and feeding aspect of their sections.

Appendix version

All I can say is be careful when purchasing this book. My sister ordered this book and when the package arrived, it was the appendix version (gray cover) - Not the blue cover version of the book. So I ordered the book also to see if I would get the actual blue version of the book, and I got the appendix version too. So it ended up costing us money because we had to return it, and amazon doesn't have a selection for "not the book ordered"

This is one of those textbooks that you'll keep long after the class is over - I was skeptical when I opened the book for the first time and realized that it was much more of a resource text than a traditional textbook, there are no pictures and the text is supplemented only with scientific tables and graphs. However, I realized that in the long run it would be much more useful! If you want a comprehensive overview of animal nutrition you really can't do better then ponds!

Vague text with bad illustrations and photos

Plane shaping: How to make a surfboard by Robin Morris is a low quality item. It is only 81 pages long and writen in large font so there is not too much indepth information on making a surfboard. The book is lacking in illustrations and has very low quality photography that makes it difficult to see what they are talking about. Even the photo on the front of the book is blurry. I've seen self published books that were better quality. I also believe that illustrations and photos are needed to help explain what Robin Morris is talking about because his written procedure is not straight forward. The text is most vague through the laminating secition of the book which I think is probably the most complicated part of making a surfboard. The design section in this book is also misleading and some of his design advice is debatable. This book has no information about epoxy or wood or any other alternative materials other then foam and fiberglass. The construction in this book is 1980's technology or '90s at the best. I know nothing about making surfboards and I've never read another book about surfboards construction. I did learn stuff from this book but be aware that it is a very basic book.

Great book that highlights all that's required to build a board.

Grateful for the damage repair section too. It came in handy when I needed to repair boards over the festive season.

This Book Will Open Your Eyes

For all those who believe that "we must have government," this book will convince you otherwise. The basis of government's power is the "justice system;" anyone who controls this can do virtually anything they want. Stevens shows how the "system" is a hoax and indeed, how all of government and politics is nothing but rule by violence. No, I don't mean that if "we" just vote in Party X or Candidate X, "government will be more responsive." Government, by its very nature, will never be free of corruption; in fact, governments must be corrupt. If you can't face this fact, you can't face reality. This is a book that no politician, bureaucrat or anyone who derives their power from the political system will even address.

The bottom line is this: governments make their money by violence or threat thereof; they admit that they're not obligated or have no duty to do anything for you or anyone in return for this money. Why does anyone tolerate this?

After reading this book, you will never be able to think of Judges, Police Officers or lawyers in the same way again. Mr. Stevens masterfully illustrates the fraud that continues to be perpetrated upon the unsuspecting American public. I highly recommend this monumental work.

A must read!

I did not give this book five stars as the writing style seemed quite repetitive and one wonders whether the author could have been a touch more pragmatic, but none of that should efface the fact that he brings to the fore many points that bear pondering. As a non-Statist, the man is in line with the thinking of Lysander Spooner and Andrew Galambos both of whom are referenced in the book. Even if one thinks that the man is a trouble maker, it is the trouble makers that help secure our freedoms. This book is highly recommended in spite of its flaws.

A great interdisciplinary exploration of the role software plays in producing spatiality

I am an academic who studies various mobile technologies from a spatial perspective. Kitchin and Dodge's concept of "code/space" has now becomea key part of the theoretical framework I use in my work. Their book does an excellent drop drawing from concepts in human geoegraphy and software studies to show how software of various types is helping produce our space differently.

I think this is essential reading for anyone interested in the interrelationship between technology and physical space.

Making Happiness Real

While I am a spiritually-oriented psychotherapist whose middle name is "Personal Growth," I realized reading this book that the words "happiness," "peace" and "joy" are still somewhat ideal abstractions for me-or, worse-Hallmark fare. It is a tribute to the Dwoskin/Levenson material that halfway through the book, I thought: Happiness is Real...Peace and Joy is Real-and I have been making it harder than it is.
Many of us know by now that True Self is good-Ego is not so good. This is the first book I've seen that addresses this without veering into the too abstract or too conventional. Thinking about Ego in terms of our addiction to Problem and it's flipside, Problem-Solving, was illuminating to me, and seems to hold the key for achieving the ever-illusive state of relaxation that seems to be the background problem for all of us.
Rarely does a book offer such a user-friendly "how-to," in the dismantling-the-ego-department. I wouldn't have thought it was possible, but the material shared here, from what the authors call The Sedona Method, truly operationalizes happiness. To me this is genius.

It is not often that a book comes along that carries a message that rings with the truth from the universal source. This book easily and comfortably shows the reader how to go to the depths of one's beingness, the place from which springs eternal peace. I am a practicing psychologist, and have learned to use this approach for myself, and for most of my clients. I have never seen such rapid, deep, and pervasive shifts in my clients and myself, as I have seen by using this method. I have used many techniques over the past 30 years; I always come back to this one. There is no need to do what I call "psycho-archeological digs" into one's past to attain that which is available to all of us now, in the present moment. If you have not read this book, I suggest you do so at your first opportunity. Whether you're a healing professional, a business person, a student, a housewife, a very curious teenager, or anyone else whom I can or can't think of--purchase this book now, sit down, and read yourself into a state of peace.

A Seven Week Program to Help Attain Happiness

This is Book 1 of what is advertised as a 5 book series, but I haven't come across the other titles. The authors are pioneers of The Sedona Method for releasing feelings as a means of attaining peace. This book contains 7 chapters that are designed to be read on a weekly basis, with blank pages for notes and observations between each chapter. There is some good advice in this book, that should fit pretty well into many belief systems. Although much of the book can be described as monotheistic, the philosophy is fairly inclusive. Some of the terminology is a bit dated, since the book is based on workshops that Lester Levinson conducted around 30 years ago. If you want a more comprehensive approach to this topic, you might explore the book, The Sedona Method, by the same authors.

This second big winter thriller by a writer named Patterson (see Fiction Forecasts, Oct. 19) features a villain (a multiple-personality serial killer/kidnapper) whom the publisher hopes will remind readers of Thomas Harris's Hannibal Lecter, and a hero who is compared to those of Jonathan Kellerman. Unfortunately, the novel has few merits of its own to set against those authors' works. Hero Alex Cross is in fact a black senior detective in Washington, D.C., who is also a psychiatrist and has a facile but not entirely convincing line of sentimental-cynical patter. The villain is Gary Soneji/Murphy (read Hyde/Jekyll), who kills for recognition, and finally kidnaps the kids of prominent parents. Alex is soon on the case, more enraged by Gary's killing of poor ghetto blacks than by the Lindbergh-inspired kidnapping, and becomes involved with a gorgeous, motorcycle-riding Secret Service supervisor who is not what she seems. Soneji/Murphy is eventually captured--but can the bad part of him be proven guilty? There is even a hint at the end that he may survive for a sequel, though the reader has virtually forgotten him by then. Spider reads fluently enough, but its action and characters seem to have come out of some movie-inspired never-never land. If a contemporary would-be nail-biter is to thrill as it should, it urgently needs stronger connections to reality than this book has. The psychotic villain, who aspires to become more notorious than Lindbergh baby kidnapper Bruno Hauptmann, is effectively nightmarish. Atypical characters, sex, sometimes shocking violence, and several surprising plot twists are all attention-grabbing, while short chapters with a shifting viewpoint add brisk pacing and genuine suspense. Alex Cross is the brilliant homicide detective pitted against him

Today’s book review will be James Patterson’s first Alex Cross book Along Came A Spider. This is his third book, and the one that I think propelled him into literary stardom. I will get to that in a minute. For now, let’s get started on the review.

Synopsis: Along Came a Spider begins with the double kidnapping of the daughter of a famous Hollywood actress and the young son of the secretary of the Treasury. And that's only the beginning! Gary Soneji is a murderous serial kidnapper who wants to commit the crime of the century. Alex Cross is the brilliant homicide detective pitted against him. Jezzie Flanagan is the female supervisor of the Secret Service who completes one of the most unusual suspense triangles in any thriller you have ever read.

I know there are a lot of people out there who absolutely love this book. I was not a big fan of it. It could come down to the fact that I did see the movie before I read the book, but that was also when the movie first came out oh-so-many years ago. But, I will try not to hold the movie against the book. The movie was horrible, by the way.

Another problem I had, and it seems that it’s going to keep going for all the books, is the jump back and forth between third person and first person views. I tried that with one of my books and it just turned out really bad. I couldn’t even consider revising that book. Patterson did do it in an okay manner, but I still don’t like the jumps

The story is quite good, though. About the only thing I didn’t like about the story was the way Patterson overindulged in the Cross played up the African American hatred. For someone who is supposed to be extremely smart, Cross acts really dumb when it comes to the way people treat him.

Basically, the story is an extravagant kidnapping. Cross and his partner were put on it because the DC police needed their best detective. Right from the start, Cross was shunned, but he soon made it known that he needed to be kept in the loop. Eventually, it is Cross who figures it out.

It is a good read. Patterson knows how to keep the suspense going. Other than the minor flaws I had with the layout of the story it is a good story. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants a good suspense thriller read.

Alex Cross #1 Along Came a Spider

I found that James Patterson's #1 book "Along Came a Spider" is a very interesting read. It it not too often that I can find a psychological mystery to be this exceptional. The Gary Soneji/Murphy out smarting the police with being a psychopath, potential Multiple personality disorder/ personality fatigue, and being the actor with having homicidal "1 year/5 year/lifetime plans" to be famous like he feels he should be is very interesting. From what I heard (without reading any other Alex cross books), this book will set up for some storylines in the next few books allowing for some interesting storylines for the book now.

This book series is the Law and Order: Criminal Intent series of James Patterson. While the story revolves around the crime and solving the crime, there is a huge element to the psychological, motives and the "criminal intent". It involves the "ticking" of the criminal to why they would do the things they would do. It can range from money to famous to just being a pure psychological evil driven madman. All in all an A+.

In this book by itself, there is one drawback. It can be really slow sometimes. After Soneji's trial and conviction (about half way through) starting with part 4, it starts dragging while Alex Cross continues the case. But it does lead up to a very interesting ending (the last few chapters), in which I will be willing to give it a pass.

Like I said, an A+ and an A+ book!!!

Appealing detective goes after repulsive psychopath

Alex Cross is a very attractive cop. Not only is he a clever detective, he's a good psychologist. He’s black, and continues to live in a depressed black neighborhood in DC, even though he could move away if he wished. He volunteers at a soup kitchen in his neighborhood. He's devoted to his two kids, his grandmother, and the memory of his dead wife. He's in great shape and good looking...

Alex will go through a lot of turmoil in this book, and he always has our sympathy.

Even the psychopath he's hunting finds something attractive about Alex. Alex is the one he most enjoys playing mind games with, and sharing his twisted fantasies with.

The crimes in the story are horrific and not for the squeamish. But the villain of the piece is a fascinating character -- maybe a split personality, maybe just a master manipulator, but certainly a master-criminal since boyhood. Long-range planning of nightmarish deeds is his specialty.

There's plenty of action throughout, and a shocking twist at the end. This is my first experience of James Patterson, and I'm impressed. I've ordered the next Alex Cross novel. Hope it's as gripping as this one.
